Christmas Fire [Posted on 2008-09-26]
I remember the disaster of Holiday Celebration Barbie 2001 and I bet you do too, people just couldn't get used to the sight of Barbie as an Austrian ice queen with fair, nearly colorless hair spread out from her face like the feeble rays of a setting sun. And the outfit they put her in was both garish and overstylized, like Bob Mackie without the charm. Fans speculated that Mattel was going for an otherworldly, elf queen look, like Cate Blanchett as Galadriel in The Fellowship of the Ring, but on Barbie it just looked strange, though very pagan: one wondered what unearthly "holiday" such a Barbie could be celebrating---something from the cult of Cthulhu perhaps?

The "Holiday Celebration" Barbies were, of course, intended as a sort of cutrate or populist version of the traditional "Holiday Barbies" (no celebration in the name) that had been hits for years before the first HCB in 2000. Needless to say, the 2001 version nearly derailed this baby before she could properly be said to have left the station, so a lot of pressure was happening in the Big Doll House in relation to the 2002 model. And when she came out we were relieved and pleased, and the piece sold in giant numbers. Though when I look at her now on my doll shelf, I realize that actually she isn't all that special, just a comforting step away from the dead Valkyrie look of 2001.

2002, wrapped in a burgundy sort of tinfoil wrap, over a fuchsia gown embroidered with flowers and jewels, has a Paris Hilton look, doesn't she, but I think that's because Paris modeled her "evening look" after this very doll, complete with her extensions sticking right out the top of her head like a geyser. Like 2002, Paris parts her hair on the left and sweeps it severely from her shining brow so that the paparazzi must focus on her chiseled face and the great silver necklace she wears when she celebrates Christmas with the Hilton family. The packaging in this one is a further improvement over 2001, for you can see more of her all the way round (or nearly so) as compared to the restricted glimpse you had in the earlier model. One girl I know actually took hers out of the box to look at it, but we don't speak to her any more. I mean really!

Not like an average toy [Posted on 2008-11-23]
Well, this is a collector toy so I wouldn't say it has any educational value. I bought it for my girlfriend and she's very happy with it. I've been buying Happy Holiday Barbies for her for quite some time now and I'd like to say this one has been the... cutest? She's liked this one the most.
