Goofy [Posted on 2008-11-03] I've enjoyed most of Strieber's other works but this one wasn't very good. It was poorly written in a very slapdash manner; it seems like his writing abilities are slipping with every new book.
I thought this one was going to be as interesting as Greys, but wasn't, and didn't even follow the Greys storyline. He's totally flipped out about what the "aliens" are or aren't, why they're here if they are, etc.
Toward the end it was fairly interesting about Abaddon and how it has influenced world Judeo-Christian mythology, but I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. If I want to read really badly written "alternate-reality universes" stuff, I'd read Harry Turtledove.
He lost his spark [Posted on 2008-11-13] He used to be exciting. Now he is excited!
This book is silly and stupid.

Good start......horrible end [Posted on 2008-11-13] This book started off well. The action flew and the characters were interesting. Then it started to become tedious and fall apart. I think somewhere along the line the author forgot he was telling a story and started believing he was living this and reporting it. Anyways the last 1/3 of the book was painful to read and the plot just fell apart:(
Just....bad [Posted on 2008-12-09] Short review - if you like intelligent plotting, well-defined characters and clear writing, this book is not for you. Less a novel and more a hodgepodge of various new age plot elements - think "Battlefield Earth" level of coherence. If you have a background in hard science fiction, then certainly this book will disappoint.
More like 3 1/2 stars.... [Posted on 2008-12-24] December 21, 2012 is approaching and the fate of the entire world is at stake....
Archaeologist Martin Winters is thrilled with the chance to use a new method to date the age of the Pyramid of Khufu. But things go awry as the pyramid collapses and large objects, shaped like lenses, begin appearing all over the world. The aliens are coming....
Meanwhile, in an alternate world, Wylie (or Wiley, as it is spelled both ways throughout the book) Dale is working on his next book. But is it fictional or a history of another world, closely connected to his own? And what will happen when these two worlds collide as the December 12, 2012 date nears?
2012: THE WAR FOR SOULS is almost like two books in one. The first half of the story is a fast paced thriller in which the reader can't stop turning the pages. The plot switches between Wylie and Martin's two worlds as the tension builds. The character development is superb as it's hard not to get drawn into the storyline. The world is skidding out of control and Martin and Wylie are struggling to cope in their rapidly changing worlds. I would suspect Whitley Strieber drew upon some of his personal experiences in creating these two characters as the emotional content is quite high.
However, the second half of the book takes a turn for the bizarre. Metaphysical thoughts and ideology overtake the thriller and the storyline gets a bit confusing. The underlying meaning of the second half is a thought provoking one but it strikes a discordant note in the context of the earlier part of the book. Perhaps a little more explanation on the various worlds and characters would have helped make the story flow more smoothly. As it is, a strong start ends with a weak and perplexing conclusion.
