Simply The Best..... [Posted on 2008-06-13] I recently purchased a MacBook and was looking for a proper dvd burner for it and this is it. Fire wire.... 20X might as well say 200X because it is super fast.. burns a 4 gig dvd in about 10 minutes.. CD in about 1 min or less... If you burn alot of DVD's or CD's this is a must have for Mac owners....
Couldn't get it to work [Posted on 2008-08-12] I spent a good 8 hours trying to get this running on a 2 month old Macbook running OS 10.5.4 with 2GB memory. DVD's played from drive and the burning software opened, but I could not get software to locate the drive to burn anything. I downloaded software updates from website, but still no go. Contacted LaCie support via email who responded same day with a list of three updates to download in a specific order, re-booting after first but not second, etc....If that didn't work, which it didn't, they suggested trashing program that I installed from the disc supplied with burner, and re-installing the whole thing vie LaCie website internet download. Tried that but still couldn't get it burning/printing anything. So I wasted the better part of a day. I'm also bugged by LaCie support telling me I had to use one specific brand of disc, as some other (very reputable) brands might not work well or at all. I tried their suggested disc brand, which also didn't work, so I also wasted money on two packages of not-cheap discs. I don't think this is acceptable.
Superb Optical Drive [Posted on 2008-08-18] I purchased this optical drive because I had been using the "slot loading" drive in my macbook pro quite a bit and I wanted to prolong its life by using an external drive while at home. The firewire 400 version of this drive is fast and it has read a couple of DVDs that my internal drive would just spit out. Also, I wanted a "tray loading" drive since I had a lot of problems getting the internal slot loader to spit out a dvd on one occasion. The price was good and the performance has been superb, so far (after about 2 months). The only fault I can find is that LaCie still includes Toast 8 with the purchase while Toast 9 has been out for quite awhile.
