I wanted to hook up my eSATA hard drive and had extra ports on my motherboard. This item did the trick!

12 inch cable - 3 inches longer than competing product [Posted on 2008-07-14]
I plan to purchase this product instead of the competing product by Sabrent. Sabrent's product has a 9" cable according to one of the reviewers. I easily found this product's specifications on Startech's website, and they state that the cables are 12" long.

Neutral rating of 3 stars for now. I'll update this review with my findings when I receive the product.

May not work with eSATA drives [Posted on 2008-07-29]
I bought two Western Digital My Book 1T drives and thought I might hook them up via eSATA. My HP PC motherboard has 6 SATA ports and so I thought why buy two port eSATA controller card when I can instead use this product. Well, my bad. I did not do the research. Physically this product does what it claims: converts an SATA connector to eSATA, however electrically those interfaces are not compatible. Though pinout is similar, eSATA has a higher signal level than SATA as I have found out. In a nutshell it did not work for my WD My book, with a 6ft cable. It may work for other drives that are more fogiving, or a shorter, high quality eSATA cable with less loss. The right solution of course is to get an eSATA contoller card. For me, during boot, the BIOS can see the drive, but then Vista just hangs. I am not using it as my boot drive, just as a data drive. I rate the product a 2 because it appears to be a good quality product and arrived very quick. It just does not work if you don't know what you are doing -and I didn't. The product description should be more clear on what it can and cannot do.
