This simple pass-through connector is a godsend when you wish to add an external SATA drive to a system that already has four SATA ports on the motherboard (MB). It fits into an empty PCI slot (in a PC) and comes with two attached short cables that slide easily into the MB's free SATA ports. I have two internal SATA hard drives and added a Seagate FreeAgent Pro (320 GB) that comes with both an USB and a eSATA port in the base. USB works well, but having a direct connection to existing ports (without having to install another controller or software) really makes the HDD fly. And you can add a second external SATA drive if you wish.
Doesn't work for a Mac Pro [Posted on 2007-09-02]
The cables are two inches too short to use in a Mac Pro - and I discovered this too late to return it.

I bought a Seagate FreeAgent Pro 500 GB USB / eSATA External Hard Drive ST305004FPA1E2-RK that comes with both a USB and eSATA port. I started using the USB port, but intermittently lost communications (guessing it's a computer problem). So, I bought this eSATA bracket in order to use the eSATA connection. My Dell had two open SATA connections inside, and these two ports plugged in easily. From the back of the bracket to the tip of the cable, it is exactly 12 inches. So, you'll want to measure inside your computer to make sure that the bracket's cables will reach. You'll need some slack in the cable to plug it in, so make sure the internal SATA port is within 10 inches of where the bracket will be. For the external connection, I bought a 36IN Esata Signal Cable 7PIN/7PIN M/m, which connected from the bracket to my external drive. Everything seems to be working perfectly.

Not sure why this costs $18! Like the subject says, it is metal plate with plastic and wire. It is mass produced abroad - so, why $18?
