I use several of these inexpensive kits hooked up through add-on usb2 cards to turn a mediocre computer into a dependable home network server. The hardware appears to be fairly sturdy, as I've dropped them before with no ill effects although I'm sure that's not recommended. Being able to use them to back each other up and move them from one physical location to another is another reason why I went with externals. They are also easy to swap drives in and out of. I have used several other brands and they had fan or power transformer problems not to mention they were sometimes pretty labor intensive when changing out disks.
