Pain...so much pain! [Posted on 2004-05-26]
STAY AWAY!!! This game is terrible! The dialogue, voice acting, plot, music, monsters, interface, and fighting are awful! Ooohh, scare monsters away...with a flashlight? Huh? One character explains how scared she is because everything is, "Really dark," when it's night out. The girl is a simp. (...). The music is a bizarre techno-rumbling which I thought was a computer malfunction. Everything about this game is just so...bad. Horrible. HORRIBLE!!! Oh, and it's not scary at all, just dark.

Interesting [Posted on 2005-06-20]
This is my first foray into Alone in The Dark, horror/mystery-type games and my overall opinion is positive. Every once in a while, however, I am finding myself a bit frustrated from just being stumped in general, because occasionally the clues you have to find to move forward can be a bit of a stretch of logic (that's my opinion). Other than that, I am having fun (those that are reading that have played it, I am stuck in the Library with that darn winged monster-thing, it just won't die even though I figured out the shooting trick-- but I'll get it!). The reviewer below my review obviously played the part of Aline (yes, you can play one of two characters that start off in two different locations with different equipment-- oh! The replayability value!) and gave up in the first 10 minutes without getting to any of the literature that explains the creatures of Darkness and their (obvious) aversion to light. After you start finding some of the reading --Obed's Doctorate of Phriendship was a good laugh! :-)-- you rapidly become immersed in a pretty sinister plot. And yes, some cinematics and monsters *will* pop out when you don't expect them, and they *will* startle you. Okay, the graphics, resolution and some of the music could be better (let's not forget the year it was from, games have come a long way since then), but overall I think the extra cheese makes the creepy atmosphere all the better.

Windows XP users will have difficulty installing and running the game unless they create a new copy of autoexec.nt, which newer versions of Windows, by default, do not have. In order to get this (and lots of other old Windows programs) running, check out Microsoft help here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324767

Within my experience it is not necessary to create a new command.nt as the help article suggests-- if you follow the instructions for just autoexec.nt you should be cruising toward Alone in the Dark bliss!

All-in-all, this game packs lots of entertainment, I wish it had a game timer to tell me how many hours I've spent lost in it (use the maps!!!). Used and new under two bucks? How can you go wrong? :-)

1 of the best games I've ever played [Posted on 2006-09-17]
(I suck at spelling keep that in mind)When I first found this game it was at gamestop for Ps1 I thaut it looked cool so I got it and i'm glad I did.To start out with I disliked the camra it was seen by seen(NOT point and click)and you didnt no where it would be placed(in a window, right next to you,a few yards away, stuff like that) but when I got use to it I relly liked it.well I got stuck more times than I can count and put it away for awile and perodicly played it then came a day I got my Xbox 360 and I sold my Ps2.Well I got to thinking about this game again wishing I would have finished it so I got it for pc (found it here for a cent plus shipping :))and the graphics were much better than the ps1.well you no what I beat edward carnby in less than 2 days,a bit longer for aline cedrac, and I had to admit that it was on the top of the list for me.but I took 1 star off because it can get very frustrating but dont let that get you down.now people who say its a resident evil(except for the engine) bull crap alone in the dark was around in 1992 and resident evil was around in 1996,Tomb raider times, (and its a lot less gory.)you can run in this one (for those who have been familear with the series)which is a magor upgrade,no longer pressing the derectional keys to attack you hold down the left mouse button, use the mouse or derectional keys to point your wepon, and right click to shoot.well those of you who are familear with the series the engine (unless posted above)is the same(3d things in a 2d background :).)Buy or ignore, its up to you I hope this helped and plz exuse my spelling mistakes :). rank 9.5 out of 10.

underated [Posted on 2007-03-19]
A very good underated game. A steal at under $5.00. I wish there was a sequel because i would buy it.

lots to do [Posted on 2007-05-09]
I have enjoyed all the "Alone in the Dark" games. Adventure games are my favorite genre. This one goes back to the basic mansion crawl. I downloaded a couple walkthroughs from the internet plus the cheat codes and game hints. I am playing it with infinite health, ammunition, and almost 100 saves. I need help to get through any computer game. Still, it's taking a long time to complete. My walkthrough did not point out that most rooms and hallways have lightswitches, but when I discovered that, it greatly enhanced the enjoyment of the scenery. This is something new that allows the player to see the artwork. It's also a 2-for-one game in that it can be played as either of two characters, and both are different enough to make each time through enjoyable.
