It sounded different in the game..... [Posted on 2007-05-14] Sadly, the music doesn't sound EXACTLY like it does in the game & it doesn't have ALL of the songs. You're better off ripping the music straight from the game itself, wich you can. HOWEVER, if you like multiple versions of songs (I do) then it's worth buying. It's also a good piece for Alice in Wonderland collectors & a great halloween gift for friends planning to do a haunted house; this music is perfect for halloween night atmosphere.
If you haven't played Fable: The Lost Chapters, the music in that game is somewhat similar & just as pleasant. You may also enjoy the soundtrack to Maple Story, but you might have to rip it yourself if there isn't a Korean import. Oddly enough, you might also enjoy Gothic Archies' Tragic Treasury (you can sample that one here), which I personally rate "the only soundtrack as awesome, unique, & original as AMcG'sA". Since American McGee helped dictate the sound of this game, you might enjoy the future soundtrack of American McGee's Grimm Fairy Tails, or maybe the movie (if it ever gets made) will have similar music.
I understnd Chris Vrenna also worked on music for Doom 3 & Tabula Rasa, but I couldn;t find any samples. Odds are they don't have this unique sound. I'd pay $60 for another CD with music like this, even if it only had 6 songs. So while the CD itself only gets 3 stars from me, the actual music gets a 6. Word is that if the movie ever gets made, EA is planning on a remake of the game. If so, I'm hoping they use the same music, add more levels, & ask the same guy to make more similar music for the levels.
A wonderful and unusual soundtrack! [Posted on 2007-07-23] The soundtrack of the wonderful video game American McGee's Alice is a very experimental work. The music is disturbing, with some odd noises (from toys). It can remind the music from Silent Hill. The only regret is that some of the tracks are not exactly like they are in the game, but the feeling is the same.
Atmospheric and creepy, but..... [Posted on 2007-08-25] Excessive length lessens the impact a bit. Having played and loved the game I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy of the excellent soundtrack album. My first impression on listening to it was that most of the songs are padded out to fill a time requirement.
It also suffers from the problem that all soundtrack albums have; sometimes the audio really needs visual clues to better understand what the music is supposed to be about.
Apart from those points, it's worth listening to for aficiandos of game soundtracks, or even just seekers of the unusual. Sounds of childhood innocence (musical box, girlish humming etc.) mix with sounds conjuring up a pseudo Victorian atmosphere (strings, steam machinery etc) and are given a sinister feel. Of course it's all done with electronics, but that's the clever part of it!
Definitely a late night listening experience, preferably with headphones.
I love this game... [Posted on 2008-03-21] I have had this game since 2001, played it and STILL playing with it. I play it from time to time just because I miss the great characters. I know Sarah M Geller is slated for the movie and as much as I love her, I have to say Emma Roberts would be a much better choice and I am the biggest Buffy fan. Emma is younger plus after watching Nancy Drew the other day I noticed how much she looks like Alice. So listen up powers that be...
Weird, eerie, interesting music from a cool game [Posted on 2008-03-25] This cd contains great music from the beautiful, eerie game "American McGee's Alice". Anyone who loved the game would probably love this CD as well. The game was beautifully rendered and amazing, and the music is great art in its own right.
