Desktop supercomputer [Posted on 2005-05-31] Apple is, quite simply, the best and most innovative computer manufacturer. Consumer Reports recently identified Apple computers as the most reliable computers currently available and a PC magazine user survey reached the same conclusion. Also PC magazine has picked a Macintosh G5 as the best multi-purpose desktop computer. Now Apple has this even more powerful Macintosh G5 computer with dual 2.3 GHz processors.
Yes, most people use Windows-based PCs, but do you want to be just another member of the PC herd -- with all of the problems and frustrations (including frequent crashes and virus attacks) presented by Windows-based PCs -- or are you looking for a computer which is user friendly, seldom crashes, and is virtually impervious to virus attacks? If these virtues are more important to you than being one of the crowd, please seriously consider buying an Apple computer. The Power Mac G5 is Apple's top-of-the-line computer series -- essentially desktop supercomputers. Like all Power Mac G5s this computer is more than twice as fast as a Pentium 4 with the same clock speed and has dual 64-bit processors. All computers will have 64-bit processors some day but very few PCs, except for Mac G5s, have them at this time. If you're looking for a super fast, versatile, easy to use computer (and want to stop worrying abut virus attacks) and are willing to try something off the beaten path, you'll love this new dual 2.3 GHz processor Power Mac G5. If you want still more power consider the fastest Power Mac G5 with dual 2.7 GHz processors. On the other hand, if you want the virtues of Apple computers and G5 power at a lower price consider the Power Mac G5 with dual 2.0 GHz processors or the new G5 iMacs.
Absolutely a top notch computer - buy it even if the Intel change is coming! [Posted on 2005-07-18] I bought this computer almost two months ago to improve the quality of my Graphic Design and to cut the time to process video and DVD burning. I am as always pleasantly pleased with my Apple purchase!
I normally upgrade about every couple of years or so to stay up with technology and to implement the newest possible software and upgrades. I am glad I did this time, for sure. This 2.3 GHz Dual setup is incredibly fast, very quiet, and I was able to use the included iDVD and iMovie software to produce a great DVD of a friend's wedding that they will love! Apple Computer has put together a terrific computer in this 2.3 GHz Dual, and wouldn't you know it, the weekend after I bought this computer Apple made the announcement that Intel was going to be producing their processors starting later on in 2006! Don't be afraid of that announcement, though - after reading reviews and talking to industry analysts, including David Pogue, author of all the "Missing Manual" series of books for the Mac, I am convinced that if you need a system now, buy this 2.3 GHz Dual. You'll be glad that you did.
The best designed computers in the world [Posted on 2005-10-02] This is the best industrial design of any personal computer in the world, including all previous Macs. It is form meets function executed perfectly-a true work of art. Just looking at it evokes a sense of bauhaus design ethic unsurpassed by not even a handful of other consumer products in the world.
Not only does the G5 look beautifully utopian and industrial, but every design feature is also functional (ie. it's not just for looks). And open up the sturdy aluminium case and inside you will see absolutely no hanging wires. It is as sleek on the inside as on the outside. But if you need a wire (to add a 2nd hard drive for example), they are there, neatly tucked away for you to pull out and use.
Just looking at the box you can tell that a lot of love and thought went into designing the G5. Another example is the drilled holes on the front and rear of the box. Notice that the holes are included on the curved part of the metal as well? As someone who has worked in industrial design, I can tell you that this is no easy feat to achieve. They had to manufacture the case such that the holes would not warp and look oval upon bending the metal. Extra steps like this are what separate Apple from all the rest. Not to mention OSX, which is a better operating system than Windows on so many levels.
Since the Intel chip Macs will not reach the Powermac line until later on (they will begin with lower end Macs first), and it will be a while before everything is transitioned over, I think buying a G5 is quite smart.
I believe the dual 2.3Ghz is the best buy because it's not as expensive as the 2.7 and the 2.7 runs much hotter (even though it's liquid cooled, the fans still kick in more often). The 2.3 G5 is very quiet. Although it has 5 fans, they spin at a low speed and practically never have to ramp up to high speed.
The 2.3 is so speedy I can hardly believe it, especially for the price. You are practically getting a supercomputer for a couple of thousand dollars-amazing. Highly recommend!
Overpriced clunker [Posted on 2005-10-17] I have a brand-new top of the line g5 with twin 2.7ghz processors.
It's terrible! It's crashed my Microsoft Word so many times I can't even count. Safari crashes regularly. Itunes crashes regularly. I can't believe I spent so much money on this lemon... maybe everyone's right when they say Apple is in truth an inferior product which people only buy because of the mystique, not the quality.
