This gadget does the trick [Posted on 2007-12-23] This gadget does the trick for the right price. Great for getting to those close together and sometimes oddly placed USB ports on laptops. I use mine for software that requires a "dongle" to use. I save wear and tear on that valuable little USB dongle by never actually pulling it to unplug it, I simply always leave the dongle in this handy device and pop it in and out of the port. This way I will never wind up being unable to use my expen$ive software.
Nice little adapter for USB devices [Posted on 2008-01-01] The convenience of USB 'plug and play' can be compromised by the clutter of extra cables, or a device sticking awkwardly out of a USB port - especially for portable PCs.
When I bought a shiny new thumb-drive-sized cellular broadband modem for my tablet PC, I was worried that the USB port or the device (sticking 2" out of the edge of the tablet) would eventually be damaged. The USB cable and monitor attachment clip supplied with the modem helped, but the clip would slip and the cable was difficult to route neatly.
The Flexible USB Cable Adapter turned out to be a nearly perfect solution. Its ability to swivel in 3 directions lets the USB device be attached in a neat "L" configuration, tucked along the edge of the tablet. The 3-axis rotation built into the adapter accommodates a variety of mounting positions.
The adapter also provides some strain relief. If accidently bumped or snagged, the USB device and adapter swivel away from the impact, reducing the likelihood of damage to device or port.
This small and light-weight adapter's low profile keeps adjacent USB ports accessible. The molded plastic and metal construction feels fairly substantial.
I have found only one shortcoming in the adapter for mobile use. The `click-stop' detents in the 3-axis swivels have only moderate holding power. This may limit the useable mounting positions for heavier USB devices. My 1.6 ounce modem holds in most positions, but will `flop' when extended straight from the port and parallel to the ground. This is at most a minor inconvenience in an otherwise well designed adapter.
For neatly and safely attaching a small USB device, the Flexible USB Cable Adapter is a well designed, low cost solution.
UPDATE 4/21/08
I am ordering another few of these. My tablet pc / celluar modem see a lot of rough field use. One time, I had the edge of my tablet get caught in a steel door. The USB cable adapter was sheared in half destroying it. Just what I wanted! A $7 dollar device giving up it's life instead of my $200 modem or $2000 tablet. A second one met a similar fate 2 months later. No damage to PC or modem. Nice, cheap insurance.
As expecetd [Posted on 2008-06-18] Item works as expected. Too bad it is not totally flexible in a 3-dimensional way. Heavier USB device can not be hold in a tilt way because of weight. Anyway I cannot expect more from it.
A bit flimsy [Posted on 2008-07-04] This is okay to keep in your backpack, but I prefer the Tripp Lite U005-10I USB Right Angle Gold Extension Cable A-F/M(90deg) - 10in it's much more sturdy.
Decent, but does not hold any weight [Posted on 2008-08-30] Works really well if you don't need it to hold any weight. I use it to attach a cellular data card so that it does not stick out. Work really well for that purpose, but even the light weight of that makes it rotate around.
