Best of the Talonsoft CW series [Posted on 2007-01-23] This game is simply the best ever done on the classic battle. Although it can be argued that 'Chickamauga' is more complex because of the heavier terrain and equally huge unit mix, this is the acme of all PC simulations. The sound effects & mini-video displays are enjoyable for the first 6-8 playings but afterwards begin to be repetitive. Nevertheless, the excellent variety of scenarios allow one to fight out most of the key actions. Only the cavalry battle is omitted. The three-dimensional mode of this series is mostly a waste of design energy because although the terrain & building renderings are fine, it is impossible to identify & control units, but the greatest drawback to this otherwise excellent series is that it is not possible to re-orient the map when your front changes as when you switch opponents. The other weakness is the relative stupidity of the AI. There are no mode settings for the AI. If any designer tweaks this engine (i.e.- to effect a true 'fog of war' & re-orientation capability of map) and marries it with the marvelous animation of the under-appreciated 'Cossacks' engine (the best of another defunct series), a fabulous synthesis would be created suitable (because of the smaller unit count) to recreate the key battles of the American War of Independence and the smaller actions of the CW.
