Move your dead bones, bones, bones...re-animate your feet... [Posted on 2008-04-08]
Beyond Re-animater(2003) does'nt reach the classic status of the first two films in the series, but it's still a fun watch and worth the time of Re-animater fans. It definitley beats the heck out of the slew of horror remakes and sequels coming out of Hollywood that we've been subjected to in this decade. The plot pretty much follows the same path as the first two films, but this one takes place in a prison after Herbert West has been jailed after the Miscatonic Massacre instead os a hospital or cemetary which kinda takes a little of the atmosphere out of it. It does have flaws and sometimes the acting is a little wooden (with the exception of Jeff Combs), but like all Re-animater film's it's filled with interseting and gory special effects, nudity, more gore, and perverted jokes, so those minor complaints are forgiven. Recommended if you don't mind a little comedy in your horror.

*The music video on this disc is the most ridiculously hilarious thing I've ever seen in my life (see title^^), only Lions Gate would inlude such a thing as a special feature. Worth the price alone just for the laughs.

The least of the three for me [Posted on 2008-07-27]
I will admit that my expectations were high coming into this one. I enjoyed the first two alot and I was looking forward to see how the outbreak in a prison would turn out. I have to say that I'm disappointed.

Herbert West(Jeffrey Combs) returns to once again wreak havoc with his reanimation formula. This time he has a new assistant and they lose control in a prison. Everything the first two did right, this one missed the mark to a certain degree. With the exception of Combs performance, the acting was pretty bad. I also lost interest in the plot and only looked forward to the gore. Which it does deliver on at times.

Overall I didn't find this to be a horrible movie. It had its moments but I doubt this will ever get frequent watches from me. The first two are classics that I know I can see at anytime. This one will most likely get lost in my collection somewhere. I feel fans of the first two should give this a try anyway.

Disappointing installment  [Posted on 2008-09-02]
I had put off seeing Beyond Re-Animator for quite some time, combined by the fact I didn't want to see a neutered version on the Sci-Fi Channel and all the negative things I'd heard about it. It's predecessor, Bride of Re-Animator, was in my opinion a solid sequel that maintained the heart of Stuart Gordon's original, but Beyond Re-Animator sadly doesn't echo that same feeling, even though Brian Yuzna is back at the helm here. For starters, besides the great Jeffrey Combs returning as Herbert West, most of the rest of the cast is godawful. Not to mention that the film's confusing script and moments where the low budget is ever apparent don't make things much better either. Where Beyond Re-Animator shines however is with the makeup and gore effects by Screaming Mad George and his crew, who despite having such a low budget, manage to craft some effects work which actually look pretty good. It's only too bad there aren't enough of them. The effects, combined with a hysterical closing credits battle between a rat and a severed certain part of the male anatomy, are reason enough to see Beyond Re-Animator alone. All in all, Beyond Re-Animator is certainly worth a look, but don't expect the same level of enjoyable depravity that came before it.

Remarkably inferior to the rest of the series [Posted on 2008-10-14]
Re-Animator, classic. Bride of Re-Animator, just as good in my book. Beyond Re-Animator...What happened? This very belated follow up to Bride of Re-Animator completely fails to maintain the quality of its predacessors and evokes the feel of a straight-to-video or made for television movie. Surprisingly Brian Yuzna (who produced the original and directed Bride) gave us this mess. It would have been a bit more understandable had the series fallen into the hands of someone not previously affiliated with the name, but this isn't the case. Granted the budget for these was never very high, but here it seems too low to even keep the movie afloat.

Basically ignoring the rather conclusive events witnessed at the end of Bride, Herbert West ends up in prison for his heinous experiments with reanimating the dead. Continuing his work on rats in his cell, a new prison physician comes along and is in possession of Herbert's reanimation formula from a run in they had years before. Mayhem within the prison ensues when Herbert and his new accomplice begin experimenting with the dead once again...Honestly that's about all I could get out of this plot wise. I know the story begins to center around a female love interest and a malicious prison warden, but it quickly becomes incoherent, confusing, and nonsensical. Either the plot is non-existent, or if it is existent let that be a testament to how interested it kept me.

Maybe the problem was the budget, maybe it was because this was made fourteen years after the last installment, maybe both, the point is that this is not very good at all. It's worth mentioning that Jeffrey Combs was still phenomenol as Herbert West, there is no substitute. There were a few moments of halfway decent gore as well, but overall this was a tough one to get through. The conclusion leaves enough open ends to warrant another sequel, but at this rate I'm questioning whether or not this is a good thing. Recommended for hardcore fans of Re-Animator, and even then approach with caution.

better than the second.not as good as the first [Posted on 2008-10-27]
This is a movie you will either love or hate depending on your veiw of the other two films.the first one to me is a cult classic and loved by many fans.the second one,in my opinion was not as good.this one to me is a return to what i loved about the first movie.the pace is fast and dosent drag like the second movie.the blood and gore are all decent and the story isnt that bad.jeffery combs is back in top form as dr.herbert west and i for one hope they make a forth re-animator movie.worth checking out if your a fan of the series, you wont be disapointed.
