Customer Reviews:

Outstanding value for home and home office use [Posted on 2008-01-28]
We purchased the 440CN last week for home and home office use. Our main need is to replace an older USB-only scanner with a networked scanner that can be easily shared among several users, and we also needed a light duty, low volume stand-alone copier. The 440CN was a breeze to install, the construction is outstanding (better than most current SOHO printers/scanners), and the driver install, config and functionality is superior (much better than our past experiences with Epson and HP printers). We use computers heavily, and of all the peripherals we have ever purchased, this device is one of the best values we have ever gotten. We are delighted!

Like all printers, the 440CN allows you to choose the output quality for each print/copy, and if you choose low or medium, the quality is reduced (exactly as is done with other brands), but is faster and uses less ink. Of course, if you can also choose to print in high quality as well, in which case the printer takes longer and produces a better quality result. Using inkjet paper instead of copier paper (and telling the print setup that you're doing so) also clearly enhances print quality -- as is true with all inkjet printers.

Our experience with this device is that most reviews of it have been overly critical. Yes, if I were desiring to print photos or outbound marketing materials, I'd get a different printer designed specifically to product more-vibrant colors than this machine can produce. However, if you're looking for a home and home office printer for average personal use, this machine is entirely satisfactory in print quality, and fantastic in overall value because of its broad functionality.

Decent Printer, lousy documentation, so-so with Vista [Posted on 2008-01-30]
Prints very nicely. Scans well. Once I jumped through the install nightmare (see below) it connected to my network.

It came with 2 install disks, one labeled "MFL-Pro Suite" one labeled "Vista drivers." There was no documentation on the install procedure for Vista. Not even on the "Vista drivers" cd, just a file called "instructions" that said "put the disk in the drive, go to such and such folder [which didn't exist], and click 'start.exe.'" If I hadn't known that I wouldn't have been able to find the instructions. I went online and was able to download the Vista manual. It took forever to install, like half an hour, and the instructions didn't correspond to anything that actually happened. Moreover, the promised scanning and OCR software did not install. Couldn't find it on the disk. Went to the brother site, couldn't find it there. Went to the brother support page, it was offline. Called brother support. The phone number was disconnected.

I can scan using the image capture from photopaint, and I've rarely tried to use OCR, but I'm rather miffed. I'd have rated it lower, except of course that all this trouble was really caused by Microsoft foisting this nightmare of unstable bloatware called Vista on us.

Not as good as advertised [Posted on 2008-03-18]
OK-So I actually based my decision to purchase this MFC printer on reviews I found on this site. I found it quite easy to set up and my Vista program had no trouble connecting. The issue I have with it is the color quality. All the reviews I read said the print and color quality was very good to excellent. My color appears washed out aqnd the blues are practically non existant. I've tried to print images with vibrant blues and purples that have come out muddy browns and greens. The reds and yellows have appeared as washed out and faded. I haven't performed any in depth trouble shooting yet, and it may be an adjustable problem. But, I am rather disappointed to date.

Very good printer if you know how to work it [Posted on 2008-10-01]
I have been using this printer for last 8-10 months. My experiences:

1)When I first purchased, I use to switch on-off the printer after every use. Original ink came with the printer got depleted very soon because of this. After putting new ink I leave my printer on always and never shut it down. Now my ink runs for months.I usually choose the option of 'Normal' quality when printing if the output is not for presentation purposes.

2)Initial setup was a bit pain connecting to router et al..and I am a network engineer by profession.

But since then it has been very smooth ride and is very dependable.
I would certainly recommend this.

I love my little machine [Posted on 2008-10-28]

I have a small office in my home and have had this machine for well over a year.

Cons are the paper tray should be larger, and it can be a *&^$#$^&*() to install, but, once you got pass that point it is a great little machine for a small office and I love it and will purchase another Brother when this one goes to printer heaven
