Customer Reviews:

Horrible printer, expensive ink [Posted on 2007-12-23]
My father purchased this printer. It is about as good as any other inkjet printer for producing printouts. Picture printouts are standard quality (some visible color splotching {dithering} if you look close). Regular printouts are acceptable

However, this is one of the worst printers I've ever used.

1. On device instructions are useless, getting useful information from google is very hard.
2. To insert photo paper it took me 20 minutes of puzzling through the various undocumented tabs and other physically moving things to figure out how to insert photo paper.
3. Windows drivers are only good for printing out "full sheet" printouts. Trying to print other sizes is not supported.
4. OSX, while allowing for complex printing options in software, was not provided with acceptable drivers. Pictures printed from OSX look like they were printed on a cheap inkjet.
5. Changing the ink cartridges almost prompted me to call a technician - it's that complex.

Overall, it felt like I was using a printer from 1970. Absolutely the worst piece of consumer electronics I've touched in recent years.

PS: Ink cartridge racket is absurd. Best buy charged $100 for 2 blacks and a set of colors. If you don't need to print photo-pictures, a cheap color laser is a much more economical choice than this printer.

Ok when it works [Posted on 2008-02-01]
The printer works ok when it works. The setup was horrific, very difficult. On top of it, the software and user manuals (both physical and on Brother's website) are pretty bad. After finally getting everything setup, it drops its wireless singal frequently, which means I have to go Menu -> LAN -> WLAN -> Setup WLAN... -> Connect, pretty much every time I want to print. The quality is just ok. Another main drawback is that the thing chews through ink. I recently purchased a Canon laser (black and white) all in one for a similar price of the ink jet. The set up was very easy, it works perfect, and the quality rocks. I recommend Canon.

Brother printer all in one [Posted on 2008-02-11]
This is a great all in one printer. I have Vista and it took a while to get the drivers downloaded but it was well worth the effort. The company was great to deal with. I have had it for a couple of months and it all works really well.

Expedient shipper great product condition [Posted on 2008-02-22]

Bypass this one [Posted on 2008-08-29]
I've owned this unit for about a year now, and the printing quit the third month. The screen says "No black cartridge" or "Black cartridge empty". I put in 3 black cartridges in a row ($75.00) and it would not recognize them, and would not print. I called the factory and got a semi-english speaking young girl that was programmed to say "I'm terribly sorry to hear that." She said it at least a dozen times in a two minute conversation. When I explained that the black cartridge would not be recognized, she walked me through the installation procedure AGAIN. I put in my last black cartridge. The screen said "No black cartridge". She said, "OK, is there anything else I can do for you today?" I said "IT STILL DOES NOT WORK!" She said "I'm terribly sorry to hear that. Is there anything else I can do for you today?" I have 4 yellow, 4 magenta, and 4 blue cartridges if someone would like them. I'm out of black. The phone part still works, but the screen beeps all day long and says NO BLACK CARTRIDGE!". I leave it on to remind myself never to buy a Brother product again. Someday I will get a boat, and this unit will become my $425.00 ($225 + $200 for ink) anchor.Brother MFC-845cw Color Photo Inkjet Flatbed All-in-One with 5.8GHz Cordless Handset
