Customer Reviews:

Good disk based backup software.... [Posted on 2006-11-10]
I spent considerable time confused about options while ordering this software. I have both MAC and Windows systems. It was not clear that both were on the Professional disk (they were and so was the Recovery CD). The web site was not very clear.

I had two chances to do a recovery. One was deliberate. The recovery was backing up to a drive, swapping the copy for the original. It worked. But there were some reboots and some gyrations while it did it.

Then I had a real crash too. The backup was corrupt. Probably the system was failing for a while and backing up garbage yielded garbage.

All my files were on the backup drive and I quickly recovered.

I may have missed it, but all the options I tried do a total erase of the target drive for a backup.

If you have a nice 500 Gb backup, you can only get one backup on it. Hence calling it a disk based backup.

For Macs, I might prefer SuperDuper. It tolerates other stuff on the drive.

The Recovery CD works well, but it is a bit slow. If you are sweating bullets hoping your stuff comes back, waiting for the recovery to finish is hard.

Be Careful! [Posted on 2007-03-18]
I found the Bounceback program to be very useful except for one major problem. If you connect an external USB external hard drive to your system and disconnect the external drive without using the tray (not the safely remove hardware icon since it does not work with their system, but there own tray icon)- it will make your computer unbootable. This has happened to me 3 times and has literally cost me several thousand dollars in lost time and recovery of data. The third time a different computer would not reboot and when I was sure I had isolated the problem to bounceback I called them and they fixed the "defect" within minutes and said this was a "rarity" and it would be fixed in the next release. I think they should have sent an emergency e-mail to everyone of their users regarding this problem. I have now switched to another backup software program.

Bad product, nonexistent customer support. [Posted on 2007-08-10]
I am copying below the message that I sent six days ago, on August 4, 2007, to CMS BounceBack via its Web page from which one is supposed to be able to request technical support. Today is August 10 and I have never heard back. As I paid $39.98 for this product, and as it worked for not more than six weeks, I believe I had a right to expect customer support. Beyond that, the user interface is only so-so. I gave the product one star only because there was not an option to give it zero stars. (The BounceBack version I have is Professional 7.1, which is the latest version for Mac OS X.)

Message to BounceBack:
"I purchased BounceBack Professional in June and used it successfully each week until 7/30/07. While I was doing a backup that day, BB froze. I finally had to cancel the backup operation. Then BB wouldn't work at all, so I had to erase the external hard drive and reinstall BB. I did this four times; every time, BB would back up the data to a certain point (18%, 34%, 58%, etc.) and then freeze.
I tried to call you about this on 8/2/07, but was on hold a long time and the number of callers ahead of me remained at three persons. I left a message, asking that someone call me, but I haven't heard back from you.
In addition to not being able to back up my data now (and thus being unprotected), I believe that BB corrupted some of my files/folders while it was in the process of trying to back them up. Most notable is the corruption of iPhoto.
I would appreciate hearing from someone about my problem with BB.
Thank you."

Never Successfully Completes A Backup. [Posted on 2007-11-21]
Version 6 worked well on my Windows XP SP2 computer system. Version 7 has never successfully completed a backup on the same system.

As some point (which varies from session to session) during the backup process, the program fails with an error message, then the program's "Control Panel" just fades off the screen as the program closes.

Added May 4, 2008: I upgraded to version 8 several weeks ago. V8 is working well on my computer system. Five stars for version 8.

It worked [Posted on 2008-04-27]
Had a mechanical failure on my laptop hard drive. Put in a new one, and used the Rescue Disk that came with the software.
Had to restart the disk a few times till the LINUX software on the disk was comfortable, and then transferred all the files to the new HD.
My only complaint - and it really frustrated me - is that the Rescue Disk seemed to think that my USB port was a USB-1, rather than the (much_) speedier USB-2. The total backup of 120G took more than 25 hours.
After 25 hours though, my laptop started normally.
