Customer Reviews:

Photo quality... almost [Posted on 2001-02-15]
This printer is excellent.

I am using it with windows 2000 (for which the setup is a little messy and none of the distributed software installs) and a Canon S100. I use ULead's PhotoExplorer 6.0 (freeware) for printing 4 pics on a 8x11.

The print depends heavily on the paper being used; with the best quality print being gained from the Canon Photo Pro paper that comes with the printer. The print is indistinguishable from a photo ! Especially if you do some software trickery of resampling the image to a higher resolution.

One noticeable problem is that the pictures are a little washed out. The Photo Optimizer setting makes the picture a little darker (puts more black) and gives the illusion of greater detail.

The printer is also very slow ! But that doesnt really bother me.

Otherwise the printer is VERY economical to run especially with Best Buy's buy 2 cartridges get 3rd free !

falling in love again [Posted on 2001-03-28]
I purchased the Canon BJC-8200 several months ago and i fell in love with it. Often you buy a product and it does not live up to the manufacturers claims. This printer does. The picture quality even at maximum elargement is , in a word, fantastic. I have a mid-range non professional digital camera and the printer produced outstanding professional looking copies. I took some pictures of a friends wedding and sent the pictures to them, they were thrilled with the prints. They could not believe this quality from a home printer. I believe at any price you wont find a better product. The separate Ink cartridges, a must for anyone. It flat out saves money. The ease of use, incredible. I am no pro, but you would never believe that if you saw the prints from this product. Look no further, buy this, you will be happy with it.

cartridge and paper buying difficulties [Posted on 2001-09-07]
This is a great printer, but I am having a hard time buying paper or ink cartridges other than on the web. At say, Circuit City or Office Max, almost all of the paper is for ink jets. The only Canon paper I have seen is the Canon Glossy Photo Paper, which is OK, but not as good as Photo Paper Pro. I did find BCI-5 ink cartridges at Circuit City, but these are discontinued and there were no BCI-6s in sight.

Improve the Ink!!! [Posted on 2002-01-25]
I specifically wanted this printer for photos and the quality is certainly very good. However, the inks used by Canon have very little UV protection and are susceptible to fading fairly quickly in a sunlit room. Otherwise, I had some minor installation problems and the printer is on the slow side, especially compared to my Lexmark. The Canon has superior color accuracy and it is a pleasure not to have to pay $(...)+ for ink refills. I would not recommend it for daily black and white typing duties, but for photos it is a superior product.

A review 5 years down the line [Posted on 2005-04-14]
My brother bought a Canon BJC-8200, five years ago, and after a while he outgrew it and passed it onto me. It's amazing that a printer that was created in 2000 can produce pictures (and regular documents) with such a high quality even by 2005 standards. It amazes me that in the time that I've used this printer, I've gone through 3 different computers. I figured it was about time that I sang it's praises.

The most indispensable (and money saving) feature of this printer, is the separate ink cartridges. It blows my mind that to this day printers are produced that use all-in-one color cartidges, making you replace an entire color cartridge if you just run out of just the magenta ink. Even if you don't buy this printer, this feature should be a requirement in whichever printer you do buy. Also, this printer is durable and produces very high quality prints.

There are a couple of drawbacks. The printer is a bit slower than the newer models that are available. It also doesn't support direct memory card and digital camera printing. Realistically though, I don't know one person that uses this feature on their printers as most prefer to adjust and crop the pictures on their computer before printing.

The printer wasn't expensive when it was first released, and you can see that you can now pick up a used one for the price of a couple of tickets to a movie. Not a bad purchase for people on an extremely tight budget that want to print photos at home.
