Satisfied [Posted on 2005-09-20] The scanner I got from Raintrade works just fine. It arrived promptly and in good quality.
Windows XP : OK - KO on MAC OS X [Posted on 2007-06-02] I already used the CANON LIDE50 on my DELL Inspiron with Windows XP Pro.
It worked alright and for all the features on Windows read the other reviews, as they are quite detailed in my opinion.
The scanner works, it scans, could be a little more userfriendly on the toolbox interface, but especially the assignment of scanbuttons to certain programs or filetypes is fully functional and working, after getting used to the configuration.
However, I have virtualized my windows machines and have them running now on a MACBOOK with an intel dual core 2 GHz and 2 GB RAM, with MAC OS X ( 10.4.9 ), using vmwares' fusion beta.
Starting up the scanner even in (virtual) windows, the scanner gets found, whether on an USB hub or directly attached to one of the USB 2.0 Ports. The Toolbox finds it and I can scan just as on my real Windows machines.
Now, after installing the Canon Driver on the Macbook (b3B12enx.bin) and the toolbox (toolbox_s4103enx.bin) as described in the installation manual, I can happily find the scannerdriver in the import menue in photoshop, even the toolbox discovers the driver , but after i click SCAN, the error is "Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected. Check Status. Scanner Driver will be closed."
Now, this is one of the error messages I am used to see from windows , so I suspect this error comes from the unsuccessful programming of the canon driver for MAC OS.
I even suspect, Canon hasn t taken the time to INSTALL THE SCANNER ON A MAC THEMSELVES.
As I am now doing most of my work on the mac, I will sell the scanner here. anyone wants to have it, send a mail. Rob
It's OK [Posted on 2007-08-13] I have used this scanned quite a bit. It quit working after about 8 months (still under warranty), but was repaired locally at no cost to me. It's been working fine lately, although I'm not using it as hard as I had been at the time.
Problems with installation under OS 10.3.9 MacIntosh [Posted on 2008-01-19] I am writing this review for the benefit of iMac users (flat panel) who have difficulties installing or re-installing the software. The trouble during installation is due to the lack of authority. Therefore, log in as system administrator and perform the installation as such. Make sure that you first install the Canosan software and afterwards the LIDE 50 driver. I used the 4.1.3 version of Canoscan (CSTb4130MXE.dmg) and the 7.3.1 version of the driver (LiDE50_OSX_v7134X.app.sit). Works perfectly and always.
The LIDE 50 is a competent scanner and, if you can get hold of one, one of the cheapest around.
I will never buy another Canon product of any kind [Posted on 2008-02-14] I'm a very experienced computer user, having started with an MITS Altair back in the 1970s and having had almost everything else since then.
I bought a Canon LIDE 50 to replace an aging Astra UMAX scanner.
I've been able to make the Canon work mostly with Windows XP, although its supplied software is terrible.
I have been completely unable to make this piece of junk work with my Macintosh. It just doesn't work. Period. Canon's support has been useless, and now that I've upgraded to Leopard, I'm told that by Canon that they WILL NOT EVER SUPPORT THIS PRODUCT on 10.5 or newer operating systems.
So Canon, kiss my backside. In some years, I spend up to $2M on computer systems on behalf of my employer and clients. You'll never see a dime of it.
Have a nice day.
