Nice consumer scanner for photos [Posted on 2008-03-31] My wife's grandma passed away and we've been scanning her old photos. This scanner is awesome, though granted, I didn't try any other 'modern' color scanner. My previous one is a SCSI one circa 1996.
The great thing about this is the hardware fade-removal, making all the old and faded photos look 'newer'.
the only thing is, it's somewhat slow. takes about 30 seconds per scan. I don't mind, since this is a consumer-grade scanner.
I also found that scanning at 600dpi is just as good as 1200dpi, with the added benefit of a smaller file, even when saved at maximum quality.
Great scanner at a great price [Posted on 2008-04-03] I've been using this scanner for a few months now on my Mac, and I love it. I should say I'm not a graphics expert, but here are the good points from my perspective:
* Fine detail: the resolution of the images it produces is high enough for any purpose I can think of, and I've been very happy with the sharpness of the detail.
* Great color: I have to say, the color fidelity blows me away.
* Small size: I don't keep it out on my desk all the time, since I only use it a few times a week, but it's so slim it can be stored on a bookcase between books.
* Film attachment: I wasn't expecting great performance from the film-scanning attachment that comes with it, because I figured you get what you pay for. But I've been pleasantly surprised. Of course, it's no substitute for a dedicated slide scanner (but those cost anywhere from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars). But I've been getting really nice results. It should be noted, however, that this will scan film, not whole slides. So you have to destroy your slide to get the film out of it to lay it flat and scan it. For me, this was fine, since I didn't want the slides anymore. And of course, the film can always be re-mounted in a new slide if you want. But you will have to rip them apart to scan them.
Some people have complained about the quality of the software that ships with it, but I haven't noticed it to be particularly bad. And if you use Photoshop, well, then you really only interact with the Canon software during the initial import phase. Yes, the software that activates the buttons on the scanner is clunky, but I don't really use the buttons, and I don't think most people will.
All in all, I'm thrilled with this scanner. Especially for the price.
Good scanner [Posted on 2008-04-14] Doesn't use a power supply, just the usb port. A bit slow but nice scans. Feels a bit fragile and I'll be using it on the road so we'll see how it holds up. So far, so good.
Nice unit, until it fails, and that wont take long. [Posted on 2008-04-21] The CanoScan LiDE 600F worked great for about a month, then the mechanism began to jerk and blur the image. Amazon replaced it, and the new one failed in about a month, with the mechanism frozen in the park position. Now I had to deal with Canon tech support. (and yes, for the idiots at Canan Tech Support, the shipping lock was unlocked.) The third unit arrived DOA.
What happened? Canon used to be a name you could trust
Nice flat bed scanner [Posted on 2008-05-04] Set up is easy. High resolution produces crisp and sharp image. Good value for the money.
