Canon CanoScan LiDE 80 [Posted on 2005-07-14] An excellent scanner. Have had no trouble with the scanner or the software supplied with the unit. All of the software as well as drivers supplied on the bundled CDs have worked without problem with Windows XP. Already have a lot of time logged on the unit scanning magazine articles for storage on CD because I no longer have room for the magazines. Circuitry/software does a great job of automatically compensating for old magazines where yellowing of the paper has occurred. Somewhat unhappy that I cannot register the bundled PhotoStudio software to qualify for upgrades, whereas the other software supplied can be registered.
Fine for flat stuff, but the film adapter is disappointing [Posted on 2006-03-07] I had an old Canon flatbed that gave up the ghost, so was looking forward to this new one, especially because it has a film adapter. First, and foremost, Canon's powering through the single USB cable is excellent and should be industry standard. However, it should be said that this is a film ONLY adapter - that is, it does NOT do slides (which seems like a bit of a bait; my bad for assuming, but the software does have the option of scanning positive film, so it seems like a important omission). More to the point, even when film strips/negatives are laid on the glass with the adapter, the results are slow, slow, slow and not very sharp. My suggestion: don't bother with the LiDE80 for film; just save$30 and get the LiDE65 for flatbed only. MacOSX interface is getting clunkier from generation to generation. Software bloat, I guess.
Excellent Scanner [Posted on 2006-03-14] This scanner is a wonder. Easy to use with idiot proof features. I love it - sorry I did not buy it sooner.
bulletproof [Posted on 2007-03-06] I have had this scanner since the week Canon released it. Although I am by no means a professional, I use this scanner almost every week. I feel that the image quality is excellent, it scans quickly, and if I need to, I can do some very high resolution scans. (Most of my scans are around 300dpi, but it can do 1200dpi). The software for OS X is a little bit of a let down sometimes, but I would say 99% of the time, I have had no problems. It is a little bit noisy, but for the price, size and performance, I could care less. I have used the film feature maybe once or twice, and I was relatively pleased with the results, again, I am not a professional
Going on its third year of art school, I would say this scanner is nearly bulletproof.
Not for Windows Vista [Posted on 2008-02-16] It worked fine with XP.
It worked fine with Vista, after three hours troubleshooting.
It stopped working with Vista.
It still works with XP.
So if you have Vista and love a challenge, buy this one!
