Mac users should avoid this [Posted on 2007-11-28] Looks like Canon has enough money, or hasn't read sales statistics over the last few years. They do not provide drivers for the scanner portion of this unit for Macs, nor will it work, they claim, over a network. This is a decision made at corporate headquarters in Japan, and the locals at Canon USA are apologetic but powerless.
What kind of clueless corporate fool of this size isn't willing to invest a few grand in a competent Mac programmer to write the necessary drivers? After all, they have done it for their inkjets, which have a better reputation than Epson in the Mac community. How hard can it be to port them over to their laser/network models?
If you have any Macs in your network and need a printer, you're better off looking elsewhere.
Mixed feelings about what should have been a great item [Posted on 2008-02-25] I'm sure I don't yet have a complete grasp of this machine, but that fact itself, given that it is far from my first multifunction office machine OR my first laser, and I've had it for a couple of months, shows that perhaps it's not as easy to get used to as it could be. I love the auto duplexing, the large scanning bed, and the speed of printing. I like the way it goes to sleep between jobs and wakes up so quickly.
I don't like the way I couldn't get the fax functions to work (but fortunately that part of our old multifunction machine still works). I don't like the fact that I can't figure out how to cancel a print job -- I am currently sitting here with a blinking red light due to accidentally trying to print an A4 document, and despite searching in the Help screens and trying a few guesses, I'm still pretty much stuck.
If it were a color laser, I'd forgive it some crankiness, and the price tag, but it's only monochrome, so I'm not too thrilled. But there just didn't seem to be a lot of choices for that larger glass bed! There has got to be a simple Cancel button somewhere, hasn't there?
Fabulous machine [Posted on 2008-04-11] I purchased the Canon MF6550 to replace a Canon PC980 copier, and to replace an HP 6210 All-In-One which my office used as a FAX. I was slightly worried because the reviews here were only lukewarm, but on other sites they were better. Well, let me just say whoever is complaining about this machine is way off base. First, it came with a Windows VISTA disc so it worked seemlessly with my VISTA computer. Second, it is nearly twice as fast as the PC980 (23 pages vs. 12). Third, the FAX works great, very quiet, very efficient. Fourth, the manual explains everything and is very easy to understand. Fifth, on a cost per page basis, it is slightly less expensive than the PC980, and significantly less expensive than the HP 6210. Sixth, the printer works great, is also very fast, and has great print quality. And seventh, it comes with a THREE YEAR warranty. You can't beat all that. Everyone in my office loves it and we don't regret purchasing it at all. For our money, it is a fabulous machine.
ALMOST a great printer [Posted on 2008-06-12] This printer could be great with a little bit more attention from Canon.
I won't repeat the details from the other reviews, but here's a summary of what I like about the printer and the problems I've had.
1) The paper capacity is good. It lets you put a full ream of paper in the tray at once, and you can still use the side "multi-purpose tray" for printing on special paper such as labels.
2) The scanner/copier glass is bigger than most other printers.
3) the auto-feed is great for batch scanning.
4) It's very fast and copies / printing is sharp and dark if you want it to be.
OK, the not-so-great:
1) I have a Linux server with Windows clients and a MacBook Pro. I can't attach the printer to the server - I have to plug it into one of the Windows systems - because it doesn't have drivers for Linux. Also, even though they claim Mac support, I can't print over the network from the MacBook Pro - and I don't want to dedicate my MacBook to being a print server. So I have to use the Canon MP830 inkjet color printer if I want to print from the Mac. What a royal pain, all because Canon doesn't seem to care enough to spend the price of a few dozen printers or so on a competent programmer! Unbelievable.
2) If the driver settings and the printer settings for paper don't match, it gives you an error message. Annoying.
3) There's no Cancel printing button. Another annoyance.
4) Our old Lexmark Optra cartridges lasted 14,000 pages for $200. This printer lasts 5,000 pages for $149. At least I can buy refilled cartridges for $50, but I still have to change the tonger more often than I'd like.
Hope that helps!
printer review [Posted on 2008-07-05] Printer was broken in shipment. Seller filed a claim and was reimbursed. He returned my money in total within 2 weeks. Herb in Oregon
