Great Printer [Posted on 2008-07-04] I've had this unit a couple of months now and I must say I'm quite happy with it. It was the top rated laser All-in-One in the May 08 issue of Consumer Reports. I've bought only HP printers in the past, but my last HP was so bad (HP LaserJet G55 All-in-One) that I finally decided to go to another brand. So far it hasn't disappointed. It has an amazingly small footprint for all of the features it possesses. Its printouts are sharp and clear and it scans to PDF quite well. I needed help in setting it up on a network and getting the PDF going, but I found the techs very helpful in guiding me through this. In fact, they were some of the best I've encountered in the world of tech support and it's free for as long as you have the printer. The automatic duplexing is a fantastic feature and I highly recommend it on any machine you purchase. I noticed in the reviews that some Mac users have had problems, but I own a PC and its been fine on that. I use it at home only, so I haven't done heavy office printing and don't know how it would stand up under that kind of usage. However for my purposes it's a great buy!
Pretty good AIO printer with a few quirks [Posted on 2008-07-29] This printer is pretty good general AIO. There are a few quirks that I encountered during my use that are probably specific to my printer/myself. The scanner is moderate resolution, so photos tended have some banding. Adequate for computer use, but not great for re-printing. The device has VERY limited capability for heavier than normal paper, and there is minimal/no option for custom paper sizes or envelopes. Because of its size, the cartridges are smaller and you will need to replace them more frequently than a normal size printer. I was never able to get the email feature to work, as I suspect I didn't have a server. As for networking, once connected to a wireless router and the drivers installed on each wireless computer, everything worked well. I had to power cycle the printer once a month, probably due to my router. But, in the end, I would buy this printer again, if I needed everything in a small package.
Unreliable Fax Reception [Posted on 2008-07-29] I need a reliable fax/copier that can copy/send legal-size as well as 8.5 * 11 pages. I have an excellent Fujitsu scanner and do not need a backup. Since replacing an old HP multifunction two months ago with the Canon MF4690, I have had nothing but trouble receiving faxes on my dedicated line, and some problems sending faxes. I've gone over the settings several times; no relief. As the HP received and sent without a hitch until the day it died, it is certainly not a case of anything else changing but the fax machine. The MF4690, in my humble opinion based on 4 decades of office automation consulting, is a piece of junk.
Canon is my first choice these days [Posted on 2008-09-21] As a consultant required to recommend, install and maintain printers on regular basis I have abandoned the HP products and now use Canon and Lexmark's mostly with a few Epson's by customer request. The MF4690 is a quality unit, with full featured software and intuitive user interface. I am 95% satisfied and only complaint lack of equal features for Mac users, but what else is new. This unit was for my wife using a PC laptop and thus was not an issue in this purchase.
amazing printer [Posted on 2008-11-26] WE LOVE THIS MACHINE! It scans easily! It prints easily - especially with the different options (2 pages on each side double sided)!! we are thrilled that we bought it!
