Don't waste your money [Posted on 2008-09-25] I purchased TWO Carbonite licenses for my three PC's. The software appears to sork fine but in 4 months but their technical support is pathetically non-existent. When I first purchased the software and had a few questions I spent hours on hold trying to talk to a live person. When I complained about this long hold time I was told I could purchase "Priority support" for and additional $19.95 per year. So I shelled out another $19.95 thinking my problems were solved. Not hardly. I have made three calls today to their "Priority support" number and each time hung up after being on hold for 20 minutes and then 30 minutes twice. Don't patronize these people if you think you might need technical support. Cause you will be wasting your money.
Hands down on Carbonite.
Not a good choice [Posted on 2008-09-29] Does not backup program files or anything it thinks is not data!!! Unlimited backup? that's misleading at best.
Works great but will not backup from external [Posted on 2008-09-30] Works great but will not backup from external hard drive. It doesn't make sense since someone buying is consious about backing up info and probably
has an external with important stuff. Had to transfer info to computer hard drive. Easy dots on anything backed up or being backed up. When subfolder has video you has to manually right click that folder and say to back up video or it will skip. Unlimited in not true.Terms # 14. Termination and Fair Use Policy say---Your consumption of Carbonite Products or Services may be deemed excessive if, within any month, your usage greatly exceeds the average level of monthly usage of Carbonite's customers, generally. In the event you are deemed to have violated this policy, we reserve the right to offer an alternative pricing plan that will permit you to continue to use Carbonite Products or Services. I have 50GB. Saw blog about 100GB being limit. Use Live chat for customer service or tech help. Phone takes awhile. They want to upsell a priority line. I called about mail in rebate. Never got some # in an email cuz i bought through amazon. Still worth it for Dot system. Easy to see status of item as using computer
Use at your own risk [Posted on 2008-12-10] I used this program, the free trial from their website because it was recommended by someone I trust. Everything backed up very nicely. Well a few weeks later my laptop had to be reformatted and after it was cleaned up I tried to recover my data from Carbonite. I showed the data was there but I received errors. When I called I was told I had to purchase the support agreement for phone support and I had to pay for a year subscription. This was in Sept of 08 it's now the middle of December and I still am unable to recover my data. I was told that I had to wait for the next version to be released and then I might be able to recover my data. No apologies or we'll do our best to get it fixed. They wouldn't even transfer me to a supervisor. I asked if they could download it to a flash drive and send to me and was told they could not do that, so several years worth of data and pictures are gone at least until they find a fix.
My suggestion if you want something to use for a back up, purchase an external hard drive for backing up your data.
A must have for your PC [Posted on 2008-12-29] I was a relatively early adopter of Carbonite, having signed up for the service in late 2006. While I'd consider myself a fairly tech-savvy computer user, the appeal of a simple way to back up files was hard to pass up.
Previously, I would back up my files on two external hard disks (for extra security). Carbonite took away all that manual work and I forgot about it till earlier this month when my computer disk crashed.
The crash was so severe that I could not read any files off the old disk. Luckily, due to my Carbonite membership, I was able to recover all the data files (the set up took a few minutes, and the download took a few days--I had over 50GB!).
For hard disks, failure is a matter of 'when' not 'if'. Having backups in a secure place makes it so much less problematic. I highly recommend online backup in general and Carbonite in particular.
