ADEQUATE PDA FOR THE SHORT TERM [Posted on 2007-04-08] O.K. my expensive Palm Pilot Zire 72 self-destructed as the power cord insert broke off in the unit. Basically, that means that I cannot charge it even though there is nothing wrong with the inner workings?!? Trying to find someone to work on one locally is impossible and Palm wants just about what a new one costs to repair it. Really, I'm sick of Palm and looking for other options. In 4 months when my cell phone contract is up, I will be purchasing a Blackberry style unit possibly a T-Mobile Dash. So, that leaves me a few months short of going the cell phone PDA all-in-one route. I decided not to spend another $200+ on a Palm so I went with an economical option. The Casio PV-S450 is an O.K. choice at least for the short term. I found one on Amazon for $64. I tried looking around locally and elsewhere on the web but they are tough to locate even on eBay. I think Casio gave up on the product a couple of years ago and mainly those still available are from vendor stockpiles. The Good: The unit is light-weight and does what I need it to do, mainly scheduling appointments, yearly reminders (like birthdays)and contacts (business and personal). It is easy to use with minimal reference to the detailed instruction manual. The enclosed software transfers info back and forth to my regular computer for back-up through a cradle that facilitates the data transfer. It's a serial link not USB but I don't have a problem with that (If one does there are always converters). I never used half the stuff on my Palm like the camera or MP3 functions so not having these on the Casio is not that big of a deal for me. THE BAD: Screen view is not that great though it is passable. One has to frequently hit the backlight button to increase viewing ability which is more than a bit annoying. There is no color or slick graphics so don't expect that either. The unit is made of plastic and could be a bit fragile. The power supply is two AA bateries though again after my experience with the Palm charger that might actually be a plus. Battery life seems to be sufficient though. If you want to sync it with Outlook you will have to go to Casio's website and download software. I decided just to go with the enclosed CD which is Casio's own version of scheduling. All in all, I'm happy with the purchase especially since I won't be using this forever. The technology is dated but sufficient and it beats a paper calendar. No bells and whistles here but it gets the job done.
