Great movie organizer [Posted on 2007-08-28]
I was looking for a CD/DVD carousel to organize my extensive DVD collection. The software that came with my newly purchased carousel was totally inadequate. After some searching on the Internet, I stumbled upon "Collectorz.Com Movie Collector". It was exactly what I was looking for.
The user interface is intuitive and organized well. I had to do some searching to figure out how to select the carousel slots for movie storage but it was just a matter of following the instructions in a well written help file. After purchasing the software (a trial version can be downloaded from their site), I was up and running, until I found out that the carousel that I had purchased earlier was not compatible with the movie organizer software.
I love the software so much, that I decided to splurge and purchase a compatible CD/DVD carousel.
I hope that they include some password protection in their next release. Additionally, I would like to track who (by user name) of anyone that ejects a movie from the carousel using the software. My kids are notorious for not putting the movies back where they found them. All-in-all, I am satisfied with this product.

I did, now I have a trial version and my license key won't work. No warning, nothing. Just *poof* your software is useless. Rip off.

I have been using this product with 2 Ziotek media carousels for about one and a half years. The products work well with each other. I have over 180 movies, and over 150 disks in the 2 carousels. The movie collector keeps track of them all. It took about 2 hours to put in my original ~100 movies using the bar codes on the back of the disks. I have upgraded my software numerous times with no problems. I have even changed computers and exported all of my movies to the new computer with no real problem other than during the transfer, it lost all of the cover art. It took the program about 30 minutes to find them all on the internet and import them again. Whenever I buy a new movie, I just type in the UPC code on the back, edit the movie to tell the program to find the first available location in the carousel, and insert the disk. From then on, I just tell the program to eject the movie that I want to watch, grab the disk, and I am ready to go.

I ran across this software while looking for an Apple Mac database to replace my old DOS-based DB on a dead PC. It seemed like it had some cool features so I downloaded it to try it out.
It does have cool features, and it worked pretty intuitively. I was able to load all 100+ DVDs in my collection in under an hour, and the software went out to several websites to download all of the details of actors, directors, producers, etc. I now have a searchable cross-referenced database! Movies are entered using their 12-digit UPC code (or title), which then pulls up a cover scan, cast & crew, technical details like list price, length & format, and a synopsis of the plot.
Assuming your DVDs are cataloged somewhere online -- and mine all were, even the obscure ones -- this is a slick way to build a database.

Does a great job of cataloging your dvds, however it is not great to use it to browse your collection. Its UI needs to be updated. But it does at least let me keep track of all the movies I have and the movies that friends have borrowed.
