Customer Reviews:

Solid computer [Posted on 2007-12-13]
This is easily the best notebook I have ever owned with one exception. It has windows vista on it. First the good. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the notebooks design other than the fact that it gets warm a bit quickly (has NOT overheated), but that seems to be common among the thinner books. I've also heard people say the speakers are poor, or too small, but I disagree. The sound is great for such compact speakers; however you'll need to adjust the base on your programs accordingly. The display is so sharp and crisp it's amazing! 15.4" to boot! A feature I love is the ability to turn off (or on) the static pad at the touch of a button to avoid clicking on things while typing. It's very fast with a dual core processor and great drive speed (both unfortunately hampered by vista). Overall the book is very sleek and stylish as well. *sigh* the bad. Windows vista home premium uses up so much ram you pretty much immediately have to upgrade to two gigs of ram (yes it CAN support it), and as I said earlier Vista bogs down the processor. Also, for this much money and the home premium you would kind of assume you get office right? Well, kind of... You can only use it (the full version is already on there) so many times before it locks down and you have to pay to activate what you already own. Imagine buying a car and then having to pay another grand to run the heater after you use it twenty times. Sure you don't need it, but it's nice to have. The My HP games feature works the same way. You don't buy the games; you buy the ability to play the games. But this is taken one step further by only being able to buy so many coins (this controls how many times you can play), or the game for an inflated cost. All in all it's a great computer but deserves a better OS. There is also a new model available with an AMD Turion 64 X2 and 160 GB hard drive for the same price (currently) to consider as well.
I would like to add however (on 4/7/08) that although the notebook works well, mine has a small dim spot in the lower right hand corner of the screen that HP will not fix as it is not covered in my warranty. I didn't notice it for some time due to a dark desktop, but I thought I would include this piece of information so others will check their screens thoroughly after purchase by applying a white desktop and looking for flaws such as this. They are indeed factory defects and if you do not check, they will not be covered unless you have purchased an accidental damage plan as well.
Defects like this occur when the screen is being pressed into the casing on the assembly line, but can also be caused by someone pushing VERY hard on the LCD display (although this is far more likely to break it outright); and since HP cannot determine what caused it specifically you will be charged for the replacement.
I will leave it at the original number of stars however, as it's still a great purchase.

The price is good for what you obtain.

TERRIBLE Warranty and Tech Service! [Posted on 2008-03-26]
Bought this brand new. Vista froze. Won't start up if AC adapter plugged in. Hard drive died. Then the Motherboard died. All in less than 3 months. Had to send to HP tech support. Two weeks later, repair of defective product is still pending. Backlog of parts and technicians. Can't get an answer out of anyone even after calling the Executive Customer Support department at the headquarters in Palo Alto. HP Will not replace. HP Will not expedite repair. The computer will be gone for at least 1 MONTH! No loaner, no replacement. My dad and Brothers HP's also died. DO NOT BUY HP products.

HP needs to new policy concerning replacing defective merchandise purchased in good faith.

Good for the price [Posted on 2008-05-04]
This was given to me as a gift, wasn't what I asked for, but anyway. Mine died after owning it for 1 month. Basically it was problem with Vista. I chatted with the HP tech online on another computer trying to fix the problem, no dice. The technician claimed it was my fault I broke it. Oh, I did not get a recovery disk when I got the laptop either, so it didn't help the situation that I had to wait 1 month for the recovery disk while HP sent it to me. Yes, mine was a faulty programming issue by Vista as I later determined. I had asked for a much tougher laptop because I do digital photography. But because this one only has 1GB RAM, when I use photoshop, all the other programs has to be shut down. By the way, the laptop came with 1 year of anti-virus and X number of Office use. But since mine had to be rebooted, I lost all that. I no longer have 1 year free use of anti-virus or the X-number use of Office. Just a word of warning to people who is getting this. But considering the price, not a bad deal if you just need something that you can haul around with you on the go. If yours do break and you can actually get someone from HP who knows anything about Vista to chat with you, then you will be ok. I had to call HP 3 times to get someone who actually knew what I was talking about. And the person knew instantly it was faulty programming by Vista, which caused my laptop to completely freeze and wouldn't turn on anymore.
