This computer is a nightmare! [Posted on 2007-07-27] I just purchased a Compaq Presario SR2170NX last week. The Vista software will not allow me to continue an online course I was taking and is incompatible with other applications I was using with XP. I loaded the updates and patches the website said would fix my problem, now the computer says that its D:Drive is full. I just bought this thing and have not even started loading software on it yet! I've had the same problems others have described with the computer locking up for no reason and have had to pull the plug. Don't buy this computer. Spend more for a quallity product.
Stay away! [Posted on 2007-09-08] Worked fine for about 36 hours then video card died. It was just long enough for me to move all of my data over from my old computer and reinstall most of my software. I don't have time for POS computers like this. I guess I should have read the reviews before purchasing! To be fair to Amazon, this computer was purchased elsewhere.
Not sure what the deal is with other people's... [Posted on 2008-02-29] ...but I got this computer as a refurb (might have fixed the things everyone was complaining about then :P). So far, I've had very minimal problems with it. I use this machine for programming and gaming, and it does everything I ask with no problems. If you're into serious gaming I would make RAM/video card upgrades, but other than that this PC is perfect for work or play. I'm able to use Oracle 10 and Visual Studio at the same time and it doesn't tax the system at all. The HD is the perfect size for my music collection and files too. It's also pretty light weight which makes it easy to travel with from home to college. It DOES have a Pentium 4 though which can run hot so the fan will kick on for a few minutes until it cools off.
As for Vista, I haven't had any problems with that either. It installed drivers on its own for every piece of hardware I've connected to it. I know what people mean by Internet Explorer issues, but this is easily fixed with Fire Fox (stay as far away as you can from Safari for PC...it takes forever). I guess the hardest part of it all was learning where things moved to. For example My Computer was replaced with Computer, and some of the network configuration things are hard to find. It seems pretty stable...haven't had a single computer crash, and when it finds an error in something it searches for solutions rather than making you waste time looking up error codes and patches.
OMG! Is the MB incompatible with Vista? [Posted on 2008-05-02] This machine was one of the first Vista machines so I am wondering if they just stuck Vista on it before all the MB drivers were fully tested. It's been just over a year now and MS updates have not helped make it run any better. I'm not kidding, it's like an old 8088! We're giving up and putting XP on it so we can run a program or two.
Not bad with XP or Ubuntu [Posted on 2008-07-13] Just a quick note here. This thing ran poorly with Vista. Partially because it is under resourced for Vista...probably more due to Vista being crap.
I ran Ubuntu on it for a while and that worked great.
Recently I've put XP on it. It took me some time to get the right drivers because Compaq does not supply XP drivers. However, I found a helpful forum that recommended using the ATI drivers found on the AMD website. Using the ATI Catalyst suite for the Video drivers and Southbridge drivers has worked great. All other drivers can be updated via Microsoft Windows Update > Hardware updates. You can find the ATI drivers here: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/integrated-xp.
Good luck, Mike
