Gray Beauty [Posted on 2007-06-29] Beautfully appointed black and gray case as compared to the sterile silver notebooks. Good buy at $649 no tax and free shipping. Best feature is the lightscribe if you have to mark CDs. It carries Vista Home Premium, and Compaq has integrated it really well with the hardware. Has no internet buttons, but lots of hot keys. However, this unit is no lightweight if you have to schlepp it around. Finally, the bright screen is not glary and is comfortable to work with.
Warning: The worst feature is that Compaq does not register the Vista OS with Bill Gates. You have to do it, and my experience was like a combat patrol in Iraq because the online registration did not function. Worse, Bill Gates shuts you down in 30 days if you do not complete registration. Frankly, I would not have purchased had I foreseen the demeaning experience of struggling with people in Bombay and their sing song nerve racking accent. You would think that Bill Gates can afford to pay American customer reps.
Nice Laptop [Posted on 2007-07-07] This is the 3rd time I buy a Compaq computer and there is no doubt that it is always a good deal for an affordable price. The only thing that I don't like is Windows Vista... Microsoft really messed it up this time. Even though I upgraded my RAM memory from 1GB to 2GB, windows vista is so slow that it seems like I were using an Intel Celeron with 256MB of RAM and runing ten programs at the same time just to open the MSN messenger. Conclusion, Vista doesn't worth it. The rest is just fine.
Problems resolved with Ubuntu 7.10, GREAT laptop [Posted on 2008-01-28] This is a great little machine, but not nearly powerful to run all the 'trusted computing' spyware. Looking at other reviews is what encouraged me to get one of these and recommend them to 4 friends, and we love them. Reviews from LinuxCertified has tested this machine and is 100% Linux compatible, which has been our experience, and my own for audio mastering with Audacity and Jack, in addition to the usual web browsing and school work. Great buy for a light-weight, but not an ultra-portable. I recommend this computer to anyone that wants a powerful computer, but not a desktop replacement (gaming machine). Just got to wipe Vista, and bonus, get your refund from Microsoft per the first paragraph of the EULA (though I haven't gotten it yet).
