Cooler Master CM690 [Posted on 2008-01-15] I just built my new computer in this case and found: the cooling is awsome. With 7 possible case fans you can use the slowest (and quietest fans) that are available. The side fans will make a whine because they are against the inlet grille, so move them away with spacers. I used two old 12cm fans, cut the guts out and used the outer rings for spacers. Lots of room even if you buy one of the Orb series cpu coolers. The ON and hard drive LED's are on the right side prompting you to place the case on your left if you want to see them. Mine had a weak red hard drive LED, so I replaced it with a super-bright red LED and all is well. The case is very sturdy and all components mounted easily. I recomend buying the add-on 12cm fan filters for the side fans to keep dust collection on inside parts to a minimum. The wire management clips do a great job keeping things neat inside for max airflow. All done, my computer is the quietest rig I've built and it looks great! I would buy this case again and recomend it to my friends. Oh ya, the plastic retaining clips for the cards are marginal, but they do have the holes drilled and tapped so you can use screws for a stronger mount. Good job, Cooler Master!
Coolermaster 690 [Posted on 2008-03-12] awesome case. cooling is not a problem at all with this beast. the only bad thing about this case is that there is no window on the side. i give it an 8 out of 10 stars.
Awesome! [Posted on 2008-03-28] Boy I was I happy when I first opened this case.
Everything smelled so fresh and new when I opened it, and when I took it out of the box, I was already please. The design is simple but very sleek and pleasing to the eye.
Having the 2 USB, Firewire, eSATA, and audio ports on the top is very convenient. No bending down to reach anything, and they don't poke out above the surface of the top, so there are no worries if one needs to put anything on top of it.
Also, even though the power/reset buttons are on the far right, they're very nice. No ridiculous design. Just simple. Plus, they're firm, so there is no risk of accidentally hitting the button and shutting off the system.
As for the ventilation, I am very satisfied. It comes with two huge fans already installed with room to install more. Not to mention that there are pockets for air all over the place (top, front, back, even underneath).
The movable hard drive bays are a big plus (Although they're made with seemingly fragile plastic. The whole rest of the case is pretty much all metal.) I like having the power supply on the bottom so it's away from the hot motherboard and CPU up above.
Another good thing: The case has little, rubbery legs on the bottom so the metal doesn't scratch on hard surfaces.
Everything is VERY organized. Cords aren't nearly as entangled as they were in my old system.
Only cons:
1.) As previously mentioned, the hard drive bays are plastic, which may break.
2.) It only comes with one front slot replacement for 5.25" drives (Not really a big deal.)
3.) If one has short power supply cables, it may be a hassle with the power supply on the bottom. But, my GameXStream 700w supply has very long ones. :)
4.) The side door takes a good pull to take off. This may be a good thing if one has children. But, it also takes some practice to put back on.
Overall, excellent job, Cooler Master!
great case [Posted on 2008-04-17] This case is awesome. This thing can house up to 8 fans! That's more than enough fans to keep your case cool if you are not using liquid cooling. Great case for gamers. Will fit even the longer video cards. Lots of space even to have the larger CPU coolers installed like the Zalman 9700. This is overall a great case. The only thing i don't like about it is installing the CD drives. Prying off the front panel can be a hassle sometimes. But its fine. I highly recommend this case.
Good Case [Posted on 2008-04-20] The primary reason I bought this case was for the clean aesthetics, and I was not disappointed. The case looks very neat, very professional, without cheesy lids or windows or gizmos, and has received unprompted praise from several people so far.
I'm not sure if packaging has changed from some of the other reviews, because my case came with an actual printed manual and a bag of motherboard stand-offs. I also had no problem installing IDE drives, one side of the drive sled is completely open.
The hard drive slots as well as the 5.25" slots and PCI/AGP/PCIx slots are completely tool-less and pleasant to work with.
There are also a pile of drive and case screws attached inside the case, so there's no need to keep them in a bag somewhere where they get lost. The drive screws are presumably in case you don't want to use the tool-less install, because otherwise I see no point to them.
The excessive number of fan slots is a bit of a minus. If you have an over clocked super system, you can turn this case into a wind tunnel, but for a normal user three of the eight mount points would have been plenty. One neat aspect is that there are two mount points on top, the entire front is mesh, and there's a vent hole for the PS fan on the bottom in addition to a filtered case fan -- even if this case is sandwiched from both sides, you can get plenty of airflow through it bottom-top or front-back or front-top. The fans shipping with the case are quiet, and the front fan is lit with blue LEDs. The power LED is also blue, HDD activity red. They appear to be standard 3mm LEDs, and easily swapped if desired.
Another good mention goes to the very nice wire management within the case and lack of sharp surfaces.
The less than perfect score is due to some of the pre-drilled holes for the MB being stripped and never engaging properly, in addition to the lack of matching screws to attach fans to the case sides. (Black tapered machine screws, which one has to find from a hardware store.)
