Good, solid speakers [Posted on 2001-10-14] I bought these for $40 to enhance the sound I'm getting out of my laptop. They did the job brilliantly - setup is easy, cables are of good length and the sound quality is sufficient. At loud volumes the sound does get ugly, but only at a VERY loud volume. The subwoofer is great - extends to the full bass range. This set is not the best buy for higher tones, but overall it's a good system - and look at the price...
Don't buy these speakers! [Posted on 2001-10-14] Everytime the speakers are plugged in and the power is on, I pick up distortion -either a small crackling sound or a low level radio signal. So anytime I play stuff with these speakers, I can still hear that low level sound. I had to completely disconnect the left speaker because it was picking up a radio station even when the volume was at its lowest. These speakers are NOT Cambridge Soundworks quality. If you want good speakers, its worth spending the extra bucks to get real sound.
Why bother spending more on speakers when it's only a PC? [Posted on 2001-12-01] Not wishing to spend a large amount of money on my PC's computer speakers but not liking the factory speakers included on my computer I took a leap of faith and purchased the Cambridge 3-Piece system because of its low price compared to some of the units out there. The system includes a large woofer and 2 tweaks that can extend up to 4-5 feet. The volume is controlled by a switch attached to the speaker's wires that can stretch 2-3 feet. The bass is controlled by the back of the woofer and overall installation of the speakers is very easy. It's amazing how much high quality sound I get from these speakers when running my computer's DVD player. Even with 3 speakers, the sound still gives you the movie theater feeling of having the sound go from left to right. I own a large TV but still prefer to watch some DVDs on my 19" monitor because of the sound quality from the Cambridge speakers. (On a side note, recently I tried hooking up the speakers to my DVD's headphone jack and it worked giving me a cheap speaker system. The speakers are powered by themselves so they increase the sound from your DVD movie to whatever volume or bass level you like.) I also own a large amount of PC games and if you're an avid gamer you have no idea what you're missing by not having a quality speaker system. Many of today's PC games were meant to have not only a good sound card but excellent speakers that allow the user to appreciate the sound that the programmers meant to be a part of the game's atmosphere. Some games are scarier, more exciting, etc. with a good set of speakers such as this. You can buy better speaker systems than this but why bother with more speakers until they invent affordable computer screens that stretch a few feet. The 3-piece Cambridge system is more than enough for anything you may use on your PC.
Really are great for the money [Posted on 2002-01-05] I've had the same thoughts as most of the other reviewers. These speakers really are outstanding for the price. I have had no trouble with them. They are silent when not in use and look great too. You can't go wrong with these.
Excellent "Value" Speakers [Posted on 2002-03-20] I give these speakers my strongest endorsement. While the maxim "you get what you pay for" is generally true, I felt I got *way* more than my money's worth with these. The sound quality is amazing, especially for the money. The set up is easy, and there is plenty of wire to put the speakers any reasonable distance from your computer.
