esthetics and sound quality are good for value. Minimal opportunities to expand including subwoofer connection.
First the tone went, then the right speaker [Posted on 2008-03-29]
I use my speakers on rare occasions. I listen to light music, and I never set the volume above the halfway mark. I also keep the setting at about 25-50% on my computer. So, after a few weeks, I was very surprised that I started receiving problems with this speaker set.
At first, the tone adjustment started having problems. When I turned the knob a little past the half way point, the speaker started to make a loud even tone. It would not stop until I turned the speaker off, and back on again. Finally, I set the tone back to the center and stopped messing with it.
A few months later the right speaker just stopped working. This is the main power speaker, so I know it's plugged in properly, and receiving power (the light is on, and the left speaker plays fine).
I would not recommend this product to anyone, and this experience will make me think twice about purchasing another Creative Labs product.

I bought these about 2 years ago. They worked great for about a year. I liked that they had a very basic equalizer on the speaker- something you don't find on more expensive offerings. But after a year, the cheapness of the speakers started to show. They popped and crackled whenever you made an adjustment to the volume knob. That was even OK for awhile, until recently they wouldn't work on anything but the loudest setting, meaning I had to adjust the volume from the computer. Considering they sounded OK but not great, and I wanted an upgrade, I pitched them and purchased a set of Klipsch PM20 speakers. In summary, they're not bad if you're listening to music at a moderate volume and you don't mind spending the money every year or two for new speakers. However, the Klipsch speakers are on Amazon for $78 (regular price) currently, and I've found them even cheaper just browsing for sales. They sound better without the use of a subwoofer. Also worth mentioning are the Bose Companion 2's for $90-$100.

I really needed to replace my old Gateway speakers, and these were the only ones with a sub woofer-out line, which was a huge plus. There just isn't anything out there that has sub-out capability unless you spend $. I don't know when I ordered these, maybe couple months ago, no I dea what the warranty is, but the left speaker just died. I'm right back where I started. I think I'll try and find a used pair of gateway speakers on ebay instead. Rrrrr.

These speakers have a great form factor and look great. The sound is alright, about what you'd expect for the price point. However, I've been having the same problem with the right speaker (the one with the knobs). When I go to adjust the volume there's a large amount of static suddenly, and one or both speakers will cut out unexpectedly or lose most volume. Messing around some more (sometimes for like a minute) will usually get the volume and sound in both speakers back where it should be, but that's still somewhat ridiculous.
