If only Apple's Marketing campaign wasn't so well-funded [Posted on 2008-09-23]
What to say about the single-best mp3 player out today...For those of you not just looking for a gym tool to shuffle through the same songs time and time again, take a look at the Creative Vision W. The screen is amazingly large and the images crisp. A nice feature of the Creative Player is its search options. You can search audio or video files by first letter of the name or by specific words, which cuts down on scroll-through time when you find the file.

You can also charge the device via DC wall charger, USB 2.0 when plugged into the computer, or via Dock connection (just like the iPod) allowing you a bit of versatility if you misplace one of your cords. The Creative wall charger has a built in adapter to allow you to adapt to international wall sockets as well.

One of the benefits of Creative's player over an iPod would be its incredible ability to accept virtually an file type you throw at it from AVI's, WMV's to MPEG-2's, and it NEVER changes your file extensions. Any video file you upload to the device has the option to be stretched to fit the screen in different ways so that the video dimensions fit the screen nicely instead of skewed.

The Creative Vision W also still has the ability for PodCasting (Or ZENCasting) but any audio (as opposed to video) casting has to be converted to video files before uploading. Fortunately, Creative's Media Software converts any file you send its way to a playable format if you want it to. Oh just wait, it gets better...

The player also has a compact flash reader on the side and allows you to import image files (sorry, none of the video) direct from your CF card. You can only import pictures by the LAST 10-100 pictures taken, as opposed to being able to browse the photos before importing, but for photographers, like myself, the device is still helpful as a PREVIEW tool for images that appear crisp in the viewfinder but were actually flawed and should be deleted. I often use the device as a preview for clients since the images fill the screen perfectly. And for those of you that do not use CF cards, there is a CF 5-in-1 adapter that you can plug into the slot and will accept multiple card types, including SD.

Single-handedly, I would say the device has severely brought down my electric bill due its versatility. I can use it to play any video OR audio file onto my TV via its digital a/v out option (which is also helpful to use as a stereo in the house)...Speaking of stereos, did I mention the device also has an FM tuner?? Ha. Now, it is unfortunate that the tuner is only engaged and able to search for stations when you have something plugged into the headphone jack, but if you ever plug an FM tuner from your car's cigarette lighter (yes! they are available, you just have to search around, as I found mine on eBay) into the headphone port, you're fine to broadcast your music over the car's radio. I can even broadcast the audio from the video files on the car's radio, almost getting that drive-in movie feel when I watch videos (especially nice on road trips). When headphones aren't plugged in, the player allows you to hear the audio directly from its speaker, and you can adjust the volume accordingly with buttons on the top. As far as the quality of this audio goes, I would suggest you to put the same faith in it as you place in ANY Creative Soundblaster sound card. Heh. Wonderful, isn't it?

Some would complain about the device not having a click wheel but I tend to think of it as my portable all-purpose media device, something that a click-wheel would actually prove to be incredibly cumbersome for. Being a PC nerd, sorry Mac users, this is the ultimate device for you. The device is a little heavier than you may be used to, but when you think about all that it can do, you stop thinking about it. My only advice to people researching MP3 players to buy is to weigh what it is that you want out of a player. Do you want to just play music at the gym or do you want the best-possible player invented? Heh. And for you iTouch users, Creative's X-Fi player has Wi-Fi on it, so you won't even miss that. The Zen Vision W is well worth the money I paid for it. My only regret is that I bought the 30GB instead of the 60GB heh. For what Apple charges to upload files to its devices (as you often have to purchase them) you get the money that you invest in a creative player by uploading your free media ALONE.

My recommendations:
------------------
1 - Buy the player
2 - Buy a screen protector (the Sony PSP protectors fit this screen)
3 - Buy a protective case (to secure your investment)
4 - Enjoy!

I LOVE MINE! [Posted on 2008-10-11]
This is probably the most outstanding product I have ever purchased!

A great gizmo to have on long trips, watch your movies, listen to music, show people your pictures.

I can cut a dvd to a 1Gb file and play it at original quality on any tv with the a/v-out cables that I bought, also.

Smaller movie files are good if you just want to watch them on the player at about 250Mb each.

Only downside is that it does not support MP 4, only AVI, and WMV for movies.

Battery life is about 4 hours per charge so you may want to get the cigarette lighter charger for a car.

Excellent Creative does it again [Posted on 2008-10-17]
I have had this almost 2 years now and use it constantly, Between music and movies I couldn't ask for an easier to use mp3/ video player. Video is excellent and the sound is excellent. Don't bother with the earbuds that come with it, they are uncomfortable and the sound will not impress you. there are earbuds out there for 20 dollars that sound excellent compared to the originals. Battery life is imressive. Flying from Florida to Oregon, total of 9 hours with layover, watched 2 movies and listened to music in between, still had half the battery left when I got to the hotel. Some people complain about the size but I wouldn't want a smaller screen for watching videos and that was the main reason I got it. Software is easy to use, however there is a problem with the latest version of windows media player and the drivers. I had to go back to version 10 to get the computer to recognize the ZEN. even after running the software update on creative's site, it still does not work with the latest media player, so if you have problems, check that first.

I Wish I Could Give This 6 Stars. If I Could, Believe Me, I SOO Would [Posted on 2008-12-20]
It's a pity that creative visions discontinued this product. The main reason why is because of the size of the screen. If people watched movies on it, it would suck the battery dry before the movie would end.
I never watched movies on it..just various videos. It's also a great place to keep pics. Creative Visions DEFINITELY needs to make something in between this and their Xfi. The x-fi is kind of complicated and the screen is considerably smaller..and the volume is a lot lower :(

I purchased one of these a while back, and it got messed up because someone soaked it, I HAD to get a replacement..and luckily I did, before they were all gone.

Its such a pity that Creative Visions would go from this to the x-fi..that's like 5 steps down :(. If Creative Visions doesnt find a happy medium somewhere in between these two models, I will have to switch to Wolverine for future ipods
