Customer Reviews:

System requirements [Posted on 2008-07-01]
Have a 3.2 ghz core 2 duo + 8800 GT. Unacceptable framerates on "high" settings on this well above average system means this game is a no-go automatically. Have heard that SLI systems and faster processors still do not fix the speed issue.

And, when you strip away the graphics by lowering the settings, there goes Crysis' selling point. The story, the lame, almost useless suit powers, the bad dialogue..it's just not worth the money.

Crying over a Crysis [Posted on 2008-07-07]
This game is not worth what I paid for it. It's fun no doubt, however there are a few major drawbacks that make it a 1 star in my book.

I brought the game home hoping to play it on the big screen with lights off, popcorn and all, but I quickly found out how much this game needs to play right. I don't think any machine today can play this at max settings. It does play well in a small 800x600 window on my standard Dell 531s.

The sandbox idea is nice. I like it. The game allows much more freedom and sinks the player into the world of the game where there is no one path to almost every situation. I still managed to beat it in 20 hours despite the annoying aliens. Although most of the game is a lone ranger deal, there are instances in which NPC allies help out.

Multiplayer is beyond horrible; not because power struggle isn't a bad idea; not because of lag or little kids. People cheat and EA doesn't do anything about it. When was the last time you seen a helicopter turn into an icicle and shatter in midair? There was one guy that had infinite C4. The chain reaction was so bad my computer froze.

O and don't get the XUSB controller. For some reason, the config can't be changed. The left thumb stick must be held down to crouch, which hurts my hand. Also, the trigger must be fully released and pulled all the way back to fire. This is a disadvantage online against people who use the mouse to shoot since the pistol is easy to aim and shoots as fast as you can click.

Crytek, their best game yet [Posted on 2008-07-14]
Crytek has done an excellent job with this title. Don't think you need a $10,000 computer to run this game. My computer is valued at 700 and runs the game on high settings.

Overall a pretty good game. Didn't like the waitless section as it
tends to cause vertigo!

Know what you are getting into, and you'll be happy [Posted on 2008-07-25]
Crysis has gotten plenty of lukewarm reviews on Amazon, and while I'm not ignoring the game's flaws, I think many of them are undeserved. First of all, Crysis has incredible graphics, probably the best so far of any game, and you therefore need a powerful computer to run the game. But this is relatively common knowledge, so don't buy the game if you don't meet the requirements. I will freely admit that I ran the game on very high with an overclocked Q9450, 4gigs of overclocked 1066mhz ram, and a GTX 280. I can understand the frustration of not being to play Crysis even with a fairly powerful rig, but there are other games out there, so don't blame Crytek. If you do have a capable machine, however, than Crysis is a surprisingly good game.

To begin with, in my experience Crysis is very stable. I did not have a single crash. This is impressive, given the strain the game puts on your computer (particulary the RAM). The graphics will tax your system, as I've mentioned, but they are absolutely worth it. I found myself just wandering around looking at the rocks and water in the beginning. I have played pretty much every recent shooter, and I can tell you that they don't hold a candle to Crysis. Whoever said Half-Life 2 has comparable graphics hasn't played this game. I should mention that I care a lot about graphics. If you are more interested in a complex story or innovative gameplay, than Crysis may not be for you.

The gameplay of Crysis is not as bad as some people here would have you think. Since it was made by the same team who developed Far Cry (in my opinion the second best shooter ever behind Half-Life), the two games have a lot in common. The HUDs are similar, the radar is basically identical, the AI uses common tactics, you're in a jungle etc. Far Cry is a little more sophisticated and polished in terms of the diversity of play, but Crysis has its moments. Crysis is slightly more linear, but also offers more vehicles and more interactive environments. In addition, your character has a suit that enables him to increase speed, strength, armor - or make himself temporarily invisible. While these are not all quite as useful as they could be, they do allow for a variety of approaches. "Maximum strength" is especially fun as it allows you to jump insanely high and throw enemies to their death.

I will acknowledge that the game is not perfect. But I also feel that it is being compared unfairly. Crysis and Far Cry don't pretend to compete with the Half-Life series in terms of immersion and story, yet these games are compared frequently. If you like beautiful, expansive, open-ended environments and lots of freedom, then play Crysis or Far Cry. If you like a more linear, more RPG type FPS, than play Half-Life. I will say that Crysis is hindered by its absurd plot, as the alien component is not polished or enjoyable enough (as reviewers have mentioned). But this is not a major flaw, and certainly should not prevent anyone from buying the game.

As you've probably gathered, I'm mostly writing this review in response to others because I don't want potential buyers to be misinformed. I want to reiterate that you should only buy Crysis if you know what you are getting into. It is not a game for everybody. But, if you have a high-end computer, and enjoyed Far Cry, then I highly recommend Crysis. It is a well made game that is beautiful and fun.
