DIGITAL CABLE MODEM | List Price: $86.31

| Brand: RCA
Features: Haven't lost connectivity yet. [Posted on 2007-12-10] I am a Comcast HSI user, and I was first setup on an RCA DCM226, which RCA admitted to having a defective power connector, so I had my doubts about using this unit.
Again, I am RENTING (notice present tense) this through Comcast, so I didn't buy the modem.
Compared to their earlier DCM2XX model units, this unit is a winner.
The design was been much improved. The unit is smaller than its predecessor and it is stackable, being flat on all sides of the unit (something the DCM2XX models were not).
The lights, while very close together, are always on to begin with. So even though one light may cause another light to look like its ON in the dark, its not an issue since I never find a time when the lights are off. This is a good thing, though. This is an indication of the unit's stability.
My old RCA DCM226's and my old Motorola Surfboard 4200 would constantly lose connection in the rain, or other serious weather conditions. I haven't once lost connection with this unit even with my house's junky cable wiring.
The unit comes with a USB port in the rear and a Sleep button on the front. They are two features that I never see myself using, but there are those that will, so just be aware that they exist.
For those unaware with what these features do, the USB port lets you use the cable modem on your computer via USB (which probably won't work with MacOS due to lack of drivers), as the USB connection will install drivers for a LAN card built internally into the unit.
The sleep button will stop internet function while the unit remains plugged in. Think of it as being similar to the sleep function in Windows 2000/XP.
I really havent experienced much heat.
And one major improvement over the DCM226 unit is the power connector. Beisdes the fact that here the connector isnt DEFECTIVE, RCA changed it from some proprietary 3 pronged connector to a standard DC connector you can find at your local radio shack should you ever lose it.
The only real negative I have found is with the modem setup page. It is just a single page of information; no logs and nothing to click. I'm assuming there is another page Comcast can see which has some better stuff. Oh well.
Overall a very nice, solid and stable modem I would recommend to anyone.
