Diafold Ceramic/Extra fine [Posted on 2007-01-09] I have several diafold sharpeners already, but I really liked the
idea of having the ceramic side as well. Now that I have it, the
ceramic side is not quite what I expected. It's a bit rougher ( due
to the holes like the diamond side ) than I expected. It works well,
but I'd prefer a smooth ceramic ( without the dimples ). Other than
that, it works GREAT!
Excellent [Posted on 2007-06-07] I've been using DMT products for 10 years, and I'm just as happy with this one as I am with the others. I'm used to their 8 x 2.5 inch whetstones, and I worried that this 4 x .875 inch surface would feel tiny, but it's actually quite comfortable. The handles stay put, whether closed or open, they move smoothly, and they're very well molded. The surfaces are just what I've come to expect, flat, clean, and efficient. This 2200 grit ceramic is fantastic - I've always kept my knives and everything else shaving hair using a steel, but this ceramic goes far beyond. I think we're all more consistent on a flat surface anyway, and I say this as a person who always loved a steel. Also, this combination of extra fine/ceramic makes great sense - after cleaning a lot of fish, or in the midst of butchering a deer, a knife often needs just that bit of work to align it, and bring it back shaving again before you continue; the extra fine is a really good point to start at, not too coarse for the purpose. You can buy one of these without hesitation.
Convenient [Posted on 2007-07-11] I have several different sharpeners. This one is good and I definately recommend it.It is not the best I have bought so I did not give it 5 stars. My main use is not knives. For Knives it would work well.
Want shaving sharp blades? [Posted on 2007-08-09] This little beauty from DMT is a fantastic, lightweight, easily portable way to keep your knives shaving sharp. No need to carry honing oil. Just a little water is all you need. I keep one in my bug-out bag and am going to order another for home.
QC is terrible. [Posted on 2007-08-27] I can't comment how it actually sharpens because I was never able to use it. The first one I received had a broken handle which was promptly returned for replacement. Second one had a severe curve to the sharpening surface. I was willing to try for a third but Amazon's policy on replacements revented it so I settled for a refund.
