Customer Reviews:

how new is the pc  [Posted on 2007-04-11]
For all those writing a review for this product, it would be really helpful if you mentioned how many cpu's your computer is. I have a pentium 4 2 GB. and am wondering if this router will work well for me.
I want to network it to an even older pc, a windows 98 pentium 800!
So it will help to know if anyone else has an older pc it works with. Thanks!

Awesome [Posted on 2007-04-15]
My wirless now averages about 300-400 MB, with my Linksys-G i could not even get a signal in my concrete block house.

If you want a real firewall, get this. This is not the cheesy pick an application crap. This has every option and more. You can reboot this router from the web interface as well.

All around great router, Wireless-N, gigabit, what more could you ask for?

FTP Problems [Posted on 2007-05-15]
This router did not allow me to upload to certain websites using various ftp software.

Tech support was terrible.

Also, speed of the router was nothing special.

Very dissapointed with this product.

Rock Solid with hundeds of simultaneous connections [Posted on 2007-06-27]
Thsi router provides rock solid stable performance. If you use Bit-torrent or other technologies that leverage P2P (Peer to Peer) your computer is going to be receiving bits of data from potentially hundreds of other machines at the same time. These connections must be managed by the router. If there are small problems in the resource management of the router, when put under the stress of Peer-to-Peer technologies over long periods of time (days and weeks), these little problems en up crashing other routers. This D-Link is simply super-solid and contains tons of functionality - I'm using it with four systems wirelessly and two wired. I am only using 802.11g functionality and did not test pre-N functionality.

Hard to say it's worth it [Posted on 2008-05-19]
I went with a unit costing over $100 as I was tired of those $50 units dieing after a year or not performing well. This unit so far hasn't died but it also falls short on some of it's claims. My expectation is anyone looking at spending more than $25 for a router on sale has the knowledge level of somebody wanting to tweak more advance routing features.

First off my biggest problem with this unit is it's PPTP support which it claims it fully supports. Like so many other units out there this unit has issues passing the traffic correctly and what you will find is either the unit works well doing a PPTP connecton out or in but not both ways consistantly. The problem is in the Application Layer Gateway which resets itself by default when you screw around with the PPTP settings. ALG off appears to work best but then incoming PPTP will drop after 3 minutes or so.

Anyway I reproduced this over and over and documented for DLink support to which they said they would reproduce and get back to me. In speaking directly with their technical support, Eric French, they said they would work on this issue and get back to me however after two weeks and no return call I attempted to contact Kevin and DLink over and over both by voice and email only to get voicemail and no responses to emails.

The firmware for this unit is years old and has not been updated so it appears it is an dead product. The stock antennas suck and for decent range you need a 7db or higher external antenna. The unit can be easily flooded with packets causing it to not really lock up but need a reboot to get performance back.

I would not buy this unit again, would not recommend for my own customers but at least it's not died like so many sub $50 units do after a year.
