Nothing Special [Posted on 2008-07-24] This problem with this unit is that it gives you a taste as to what a good extender could be but then leaves you hanging. As an extender it cannot perform all the functions of MCE that you can do on the PC. For example third party software "Mynetfilx". Also I never had any luck with using the unit wirelessly. It connected but even near the router (D-Link Gamerlounge wireless n) it didn't stream content successfuly. On the positive side if hooked up to ethernet the functions that it does perform, it does well without hangups, skips etc.
If you want to use Windows MCE I strongly recommend that you bite the bullet and get an HTPC. If you don't want to build one, the HP Pavilion elite series are good ones for about a grand.
DSM-750 [Posted on 2008-07-25] Ordered this product, the first one I received did not work out of the box. The second one I received worked ok, but did not play VOB files through media center. I know it doesn't say it supports those, but I contacted tech support and they said it would.
I also tried out the Linksys Media Center Extender and found the D-link 750 to be significantly faster.
hard install, bad customer service [Posted on 2008-07-27] DSM 750 is for one only high bandwidth links. Wireless G did not work with the plasma, the movies were choppy. Should work well with wireline links. It was hard to configure with a wireless router due to firewall issues in with media center PC. Over all not happy at all after wasting so much time this product is bad
Not Ready for Prime Time [Posted on 2008-10-13] This device is NOT ready for release or use by anyone. I spent two days with this device and found it extremely aggravating. It is not backward compatible with all the features found in the DSM-520. It has problems with network connectivity. It is not compatible with all media servers (i.e. PlayOn from MediaMall). It is buggy and does not perform all Media Center Extender functionality that one would expect from an extender. The UI is really just a folder system (I don't really care about this last point, but perhaps some may).
I usually stay away from D-link products as a rule. This does not mean every product they make is bad, however, I just have had very bad experiences with all their products that I happened to purchase. Add this one to the list. I can't say I will never buy a D-link product in the future, but this purchase was very discouraging and only reinforced my already low opinion of D-link.
If you want all these features with no hassles, I'd recommend the HP MediaSmart Connect X280N or the Popcorn Hour product (PH if your a hobbyist and willing to spend alot of time with the product, HP if you want something really easy to setup and works out of the box).
Performs well and very functional [Posted on 2008-10-23] Obviously, if your using this it is mainly for the extender (even if you don't use the extender that often) function. The media center has fairly good functionality. I generally only watch CinemaNow, Netflix WatchNow, Media Center TV, and DivX movies. I listen to only MP3. I have no problem watching or listening to media most of the time. I like the fact it has no moving parts so the unit is absolutely noiseless. Besides the media playback options the greatest feature has to be the Wireless-N networking. I have a Linksys WRT600N Dual-Band router and I get great reception without having to hide a wire running through my house. Overall, this was a perfect purchase for me. The machine is doing exactly what my initial impression thought it would.
