Sometimes Jams [Posted on 2007-08-03] Mine jams every once in while. Have reset it by powering it down (unplugging everything). Pain.
Audio Failed - Seeking an RMA is Exasperating [Posted on 2008-01-17] The product installed easily and worked well until the audio quit working completely after less than a month. It's definitely the switch or the cabling to the switch because the audio works fine plugged directly into my computer.
The only reason I purchased the switch was to upgrade my older KVM switch to one that had audio, so I was quite disappointed. I have downgraded my rating to a 2, because it is supposed to support audio switching and it doesn't. However, it does work effectively to switch the keyboard, mouse and monitor.
I have tried without success to obtain a return authorization from D-Link. My first contact was via e-mail and I described the problem as I have above. I was assigned a case number and told to call their 800 tech support number. Over a period of five days I called repeatedly at all hours of the day and could not get through to anyone in tech support. I sent a reply e-mail asking if there was a specific extension to which I could be directed. The tech responded to my e-mail stating they had been having phone problems, try again.
I waited a couple of weeks in hopes that their "phone problems" would be resolved and tried again. On my next attempt I spent approximately 20 minutes on the phone working my way through their menu tree and waiting on hold before speaking to a tech. I told him I had a case id number and gave that to him. I spent 10 minutes verifying with him what I had already reported in the original e-mail I sent. He gave me a new number. I read the number back to him and he verified it. I asked him what I was supposed to do with that number. He told me I had to visit their website and input the number to receive further instructions.
That seemed like just another hurdle for the consumer but I complied. I visited rma.dlink.com and input the number provided along with my phone number and received the following message - "The Case ID you provided was not found in our records" I double checked the number and tried again with the same results prompting a third e-mail to tech support. Today I received this reply, "Upon review of your concerns, it is advisable to inform that unfortunately this Case ID was not completed correctly for the RMA to occur. Call our Tech Support Dept. at 1(800)326-1688 for our third level support."
They have won the battle because I am unwilling to spend any more time trying to replace this defective product. However, it's unlikely I will purchase a D-Link product of any kind again.
Works. [Posted on 2008-01-28] This switches keyboard, video, mouse, and audio. Or you can leave the audio alone and switch the rest.
I use everything except the video. I like having one monitor per PC. The switching process is a bit slow.
You can switch by tapping Scroll Lock twice then 1 for one computer or 2 for the other computer. Sometimes it goes brain-dead and I have to push a tiny push button on the box. The box is usually on the floor in a mess of cables.
But it does what it says it does. I just didn't have room for 2 keyboards and having it switch audio as well is nice.
Highly Annoying [Posted on 2008-02-25] This D-Link KVM switch is one of the most frustrating pieces of computer equipment I've bought in a LONG time.
About 80 percent of the time, it will work as advertised. I can switch quickly between my computers, using the same keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor. I actually like the little button to switch between computers better than hotkeys.
But my mouse frequently stops working. Just freezes. I have to switch over to the other computer and then back, or just wait anywhere from 5-20 seconds until the bleepin' mouse works again. The keyboard will often freeze as well.
Worse yet, my mouse cursor will frequently and unpredictably jump across the screen. This is particularly disastrous when I click to save an important file, and find the cursor has jumped and I've instead closed the program without saving the file. Maddening. The cursor also zips around the screen suddenly and uncontrollably for a few seconds at a time, also with sometimes disastrous results.
I have tried different keyboards and mice to no avail. This KVM switch is serviceable for now, but I'll replace it as soon as I find a good deal.
D-Link KVM [Posted on 2008-06-11] This switch is great. I'm using it for one system running Vista and another running XP. When one system is powered down, it automatically switches to the other system... or you can simply push the button to switch between systems anytime.
