Customer Reviews:

The only bad review I've ever put on Amazon [Posted on 2008-07-18]
Once you can GET this router to work with your computer, it is fine. My husband just got a toshiba notebook and it doesn't even seem to be COMPATIBLE with the router. We have wasted over 12 hours with tech support (who are REALLY good, but who wants to waste so much time on something that shouldn't be SO complicated).
My husband and I thought we were computer geeks until we got the router and had to rely on tech support for installation.

Nice router - great range [Posted on 2008-08-08]
I went from a Linksys to Apple's Airports to the WBR2310 without a hitch on a 2 PC and 2 Mac network. The range and throughput was far better than the Airports. Before I go to far into the review, I've set up a a lot of routers in my time so it would take a lot to throw me. No surprises here. I never use the included software. The router only comes with Windows software and since my Mac is the main connection that's where all the setup happens. I updated the firmware, accessed the router by ethernet, set the parameters, WPA security and wireless and that was about it. The PC's run XP and the Mac's run Leopard and the entire system runs through a Motorola cable modem. I'd still be using this router except I added VOIP to the system and picked up a router optimized for VOIP. I picked off a star simply because D-Link is a bit oblivious about Mac's and doesn't have software for the inexperienced. Networking is networking. Overall, it's a solid router.

Junky Router [Posted on 2008-08-09]
I originally owned a D-Link Router (cannot remember the model). I used it for four years, then moved and left it to my sister. Thinking that my good experience with that product exemplified the quality in D-Link's equipment, I bought another when I moved.

The new router, the WBR-2310, was horrible from the start. First, the setup program would not run because I did not have an internet connection. At the time, I wanted to use it to network several computers for printer and file sharing, not for the internet.

Additionally, the router's IP address should have provided direct access to the ROM data (usually 192.168.0.1 for DLink routers) but I could not access this page most of the time. The router took hours of fiddling with to get to the setup program in order to enable a secure wireless network.

I discovered more difficulties; the router did not assign IP addresses automatically unless connected to the internet (I guess it only does passthrough IP addresses). This was problematic when trying to get files from one computer to another. Eventually, I used the factory reset button and I could not get back to the setup ROM once again. I have given up and will not buy from D-Link again. I would not recommend this router to anyone, even if it were free. Far too many hours (probably in the 50s) must be wasted in order for it to work reasonably.

Pile of Crap [Posted on 2008-08-13]
Before I write this review, I just wanted to say that I am using the latest firmware, 1.04, patched on over a cable (not wireless).

As a computer technician, I've worked with many routers in my life, from a low end Belkin to high end Cisco routers. The D-Link WBR-2310 falls squarely in the "overpriced pile of crap" category.

Here are just a few of the problems I've had with this router:

1) It reboots on its own multiple times an hour. Sometimes it doesn't reboot at all, sometimes it reboots so much it's impossible to maintain a wireless network. The rebooting also apparently occurs at random intervals during the day, during both heavy and light usage. I've also had the router reboot when there was nothing connected to the network and the wireless access was disabled.

2) Its performance in a crowded spectrum (ie: in New York City, where I live) is horrible. I have two other wireless routers - two Linksys routers - that offer much better performance. While the Linksys routers offer much better throughput and error correction, the D-Link router constantly drops packets. It makes streaming video and gaming impossible - you might as well use a dialup account.

3) Router administration is absurd. It reboots for the tiniest of changes - such as when you change the time on the router - and then doesn't reboot for other changes - like when you change the SSID or signal channel.

4) This router has a very bad habit of opening its administration features to the general Internet for no apparent reason - even if you have disabled this feature.

5) For whatever reason, the web-based administration hangs at random intervals and forces the router to reboot. This means that until you bring your entire network down, you cannot change any features of the router.

6) This router needs to be babied. Unless you have a very solid power system, you're going to need some kind of UPS system installed in order to provide a clean electrical signal. Plugging this thing into a surge protector and expecting it to work for longer than 15 minutes is laughable.

7) D-Link support is non existent. I've had two router exchanges now and these same problems exist. D-Link refuses to do anything else besides exchange the router.

After this experience, I refuse to use any other D-Link product.

Failed in less than a week [Posted on 2008-09-01]
I'll keep it simple. This router failed after just six days of use. D-Link support technicians failed to resolve the problem and refused to act on the warranty to have it replaced. Personally, I will never purchase a D-Link product again, if nothing else than because of the difficult, inept, and rude manner of support. Spend a little more money and get a better product. You get what you pay for.
