Works [Posted on 2008-07-12] Ok, I found that my Dell Latitude was overheating (in Linux only, oddly enough) and suddenly turning off. I've had it for years and this was never a problem -- maybe running Linux from a USB Flash drive has something to do with it.
Anyway, the Datastor cooler seems to have solved the problem. .
It doesn't fit that solidly on the Latitude, so I have to worry about it sliding off. I often set it on my bed, and the bed has a way of bouncing from time to time.
Also, I do an odd thing -- I often pick up the Latitude and read it almost like you would hold up a book and read it. But with the Datastor, I then have to make sure it sets back on it in the correct position.
So, it isn't a perfect solution, and I'm not sure I will continue to use it. It's a nice interim fix, though.
I bought it when it was $26 and not worth it. [Posted on 2008-07-12] First of all, it took about a month for it to get delivered. The fans are not quiet at all. It's performance is okay, but it's a bit small for my Toshiba Satellite A105. It's durable enough to use it on one place, but I wouldn't carry it around, as it looks like it might break.
Not enough airflow [Posted on 2008-07-15] This is my 2nd laptop fan. My first one, another brand, eventually stopped working because of an electrical issue. I only paid $15 for my first laptop fan. Seeing another so inexpensive did not make me wonder about quality. But maybe I should have.
These fans are not terribly powerful. The design of the unit itself is unbelievably inefficient. The air blows up at the laptop, and it gets trapped as there is no outlet for the air. I can compare it to the other fan I had -- that one had air flow upwards to cool off the bottom of the laptop and then shoot out the sides of the cooling unit. It was much more efficient.
Please, carefully look at the design of this unit. Look how the fans blow air upwards... and then where is it supposed to go?
I'm buying a different one right now.
Do NOT buy this product [Posted on 2008-07-17] Save your money. This is the cheapest piece of plastic I've seen. It does not keep my Gateway 17" laptop cool. I would return it, but the Antonline company charges a 15% restocking fee and it's just not worth the hassle. Don't waste your money - Look for a better quality product. I am extremely disappointed in this product.
MUCH BETTER OPTIONS FOR YOUR LAPTOP [Posted on 2008-07-19] I purchased this item, the "#1 rated cooling fan" according to amazon's compilation of reviews.....the KINMAX is BY FAR THE BEST FAN OUT THERE.
The KINMAX literally blows it away. I have temperature sensors inside my laptop and a program to read them.
My hard drive runs at about 100 degrees F, 38 degrees C. I also own the Belkin 1 fan model.
The Kinmax is a PUSH fan as to cool the CPU with cooler room temperature air as is the Belkin. They both cool my HD down 10 degrees to 90 in about 10 minutes.
The DataStor UNBCPX 3-Fan Notebook Cooling Pad, which is a pull fan as to suck the hot air away from the bottom of the computer, and that I ran for an hour and my cpu HD acuually gained a degree.
The Kinmax and Belkin both come with with a back lift apparatus that makes it more ergonomically comfortable, the DataStor UNBCPX 3-Fan Notebook Cooling Pad does not and the laptop lays flat.
The Kinmax is by far the best in acheiving lower tempatures while holding your laptop in a good position whether it be on a desk or lap. The hollow underneath is its ownly drawback as the fans are exposed.
The Belkin is even more ergonomically pleasant and it has a storage bin for the wire, it looks nicer and sturdier, but only has one fan directly in the middle, so hence one third the power.
The DataStor UNBCPX 3-Fan Notebook Cooling Pad is flat, does not hold your laptop very well and doesnt not effectively funnell enough heat away from your computer to be worth running it.
I have two HOT SPOTS. One is the top left where the power supply is, and the other is in the bottom left/middle, so the three fan configuration was a must.
It may not look the prettiest but the KINMAX is by far the champ not the I purchased this item and the "#1 rated cooling fan" according to amazon's compilation of reviews.....the DataStor UNBCPX 3-Fan Notebook Cooling Pad.
