Strengths, Weaknesses and Summary [Posted on 2006-09-10]
Strengths: Print speed, easy network setup.

Weaknesses: Bad OS X driver, makes noise every ~30 minutes even when in power-save mode.

Summary: I'm very satisfied with this printer in general considering the low price and high print speed. The print quality is actually the 600/1200 DPI they claim. After the initial physical warm-up, which only occurs when coming out of the power-save mode, the time-to-first-page is just a few seconds, and when printing standard text and line art it seems to be able to keep up with the full 27 PPM speed. If you set the printer to 1200 DPI and print full-page graphics it slows down a bit, but it still prints more than 10 PPM, and may perform better if given more than the standard RAM.

Network setup was very easy. In a DHCP environment the printer will obtain an IP address along with the Windows networking information and NTP time server address automatically and then print a sheet showing this information so you can see the address of the printer and ensure that the other settings are correct. Once the printer is on-line any other configuration can be completed via the web interface, though no particular configuration is needed unless you want to use email alerts or other advanced features. I did not attempt to use the non-DHCP network setup, so I cannot comment on that process.

We have 6 of these printers in the office I work and they have inspired me to write this review. They're lousy... They fail all the time - paper jams are difficult to resolve and this is the case with all 6 - so I know it's not just the one model at my desk. This printer is no good. All 6 in the office suffer the same issues. Spend your $$$ elsewhere.

Awesome FAST Laser Printer [Posted on 2007-01-24]
I have 4 of these printers. I am a teacher and have 2 of the 1710n and 2 of the 1710. They are great printers, very fast. First page comes out within seconds. The toner lasts quite a while... as a teacher I know this as we do a lot of printing in my classroom.

This is a good printer-period. It does what I want it to do, and I have been fortunate enough to not deal with any paper jams or any other problems. I got this printer for free from bulk purchases from Dell, so I can't say that it is worth the full price asked for here, but it is a good printer. The network feature is nice, but I haven't had too much use for it. If I was really looking to purchase a printer around this price, I would probably try to get a Canon Pixma MX850 (all in one and quick prints), but you can't go wrong with a dependable laser printer.
