Exceptionally effective supplementary heat [Posted on 2008-11-12] We purchased two of these as a way of minimizing use of central heating in our big old house and we've been delighted with them. The oil holds heat for a very long time once it gets hot, and we've been able to reduce the thermostat setting by just placing these in the rooms we're using at the time. To our surprise there was a smaller impact on the electric bill than we expected, but a big drop in our oil use. Just be sure to follow the instructions to run them full on for a few hours outside to burn off the coating they put on them at the factory.
This is a great heater [Posted on 2008-11-16] I bought this heater last year when LP got so expensive. It did a great job. Yes, if you read the manual it tells you to run it on high outside or in ventilated room for 2 hours to burn the smell off, after this mine has no more smell.
These radiator heaters do not heat real fast but once you find the settings that work for your situation and the temp gets up to your preference it stays there. I recommend running a ceiling fan on low speed, blowing up while using this heater and this spreads the warmth much better. This type oil filled heater is very efficient. They do not dry the air out like the fan forced heaters and makes NO sound except for a click when cycling on and off. It's just a slow, smooth, consistent heat that flows off the unit without it getting real hot to the touch.
A few reviews down someone mentioned not having electronics. I found a model real similar to this one on the Delonghi website that has electronics and a remote and it automatically switches between off, low, med & high setting based on the temperature difference which saves energy. I bought 2 more of this model. I heat the entire 1800 square foot house with these 3 heaters and ceiling fans. I have yet to turn on the central heat, doubt I will all year. I will report back once I get my electric bill next month. It could not possibly be as much as the LP bill would be.
I recommend this heater and the model with the electronics.
Fades quickly! [Posted on 2008-11-16] This product worked great for about six weeks. I bought two at the same time for our house. One of them just stopped working. The other lasted until the next season. We live in Texas, so a "season" is really about eight weeks of use, at most. After about nine to ten weeks of TOTAL use (we only had them on for about four hours a day, in the evening), the other stopped working. These heaters were never mistreated and they were stored indoors. Now we have two heaters that look brand new and generate zero heat. Very disappointing.
Nice little heater [Posted on 2008-11-17] I purchased this with some trepidation. There are a lot of options for room space heating and all seem to come with some disadvantages. As this was going in a teenagers attic bedroom, safety and simplicity were very important, as was the ability of the heater to adequately warm the space. I've been pleasantly surprised by how well made this heater appears to be and how effectively it heats the space, maintaining it at a relatively constant temperature for as long as we leave it on. This is after a couple of months of use, though admittedly not in the coldest part of the year.
Great heater! [Posted on 2008-11-17] I just purchased this heater and after the first day of use I am very satisfied. There was a smell at the initial start up which others have noted but it was insignificant after about 3 hours of use. The smell results from a chemical which they use to prevent the metal from rusting during shipping. At high heat this chemical burns off and there is an unpleasent odor that comes off. After around 2-3 hours most of the chemical and smell are gone. After that this heater warms up a room pretty quick even on the first setting. My room is fairly small so I am not sure if the first setting could warm up a much larger room. Using the third setting burns approximately 1500W compared to 700W at the first setting so there is a massive energy consumption difference. Overall, this heater is going to keep me warm during the notoriously long and cold Wisconsin winters!
