Customer Reviews:

Too much Bass, not recommended [Posted on 2008-09-13]
Unless by some miracle, the bass starts getting attenuated with use, this is definitely not a good buy. I completely agree with all the reviewers who found the bass too much to digest...plus the Amazon.com dealer I bought this from, NetDeals, sent me an open box minus factory sticker so not sure if I am getting a hand-me-down...stay away from this product....

Audio Bliss..  [Posted on 2008-11-14]
I am no audiophile and I do like Bose qc2 sound quality (I had them for 4 years). I also own UE5 fi and Shure 500. I am the so call mass market but my preference starts to change a little after Denon D2000.

I always thought my Shure E500 is already the best until I put these cans on. Very huge difference in sound quality. When I put on Peter Rauhofer (electronica) on, I really feel like I am live @ Roxy. The bass beat is as good as being in a disco and yet not overwhelming and no it does not sound like bass in the corner of the room. In jazz music I can hear the bass guitarist finger rolling on the string. All these becomes very obvious especially in Diana Krall "live at montreal". I also tested it with Fillipa Giordano "Lost boys calling (Ennio Morricone)" and the bass came out simply remarkable. It can deliver very very low bass very clearly. I would say it does match the sound quality of a good system with a good sub-woofer place correctly (I had a Onkyo & Nad receiver, Denon cd-player and KHT2000 5.1 speaker) and the D2000 meets every expectation.

The treble goes pretty high. All the "ting ting ting" sound especially in Jazz are very obvious. They are sharp, fast and precise. Also the more subtle "sssszzzz" when the drummer brush a "duster" on the drums (I dun know whats that call) is very prominent. And yes I feel like I am back to Laura Fygi concert "live in SIngapore".The sound is expansive. Sorry shure but I paid $499.99 and bass and treble just cant cut it (so is bose qc2 & UE 5fi). I did try Dr dre bass beat and it sounded a little like a can.

I did a test with a friend. I put bose qc2 on a friend first. He took out headphone after a min and said "Yeah its good. I always like the way bose sound they are always good at bass, treble and they have been arond for along time .. blah blah.." ok now try D2000. His first 10 sec respond " oooohh ooh .. wow oohh. There was silence until the end of the song.

I actually wanted to get the D5000 but the cost and the subtle diff from other reviewer put me off (I dun know what is that little diff cause I have not heard the D5000). Instead I got the D2000 and a portable amp (THe RSA Hornet @ $399). The improvement is substantial. The signtaure of the sound is still the same but the Subtle Deep bass, Mid bass, extended high, and separation becomes more prominent. And when I off my amp, the sound quality becomes "thinner". I know an IPOD or zune can power this to deafening vol but it just lack the punch without an amp. Dun get me wrong the D2000 still sound very very good without an amp.

As the weeks went by I ended spending another $145. I realize the potential to improve the Denon is huge. My setup right now is Ipod 4th Gen (all lossless) with ALO Cryo SXC 22G cable ($145) lineout to RSA hornet portable amplifier. I did another blind test with my friend. This time with direct phone jack out to D2000 and other with Line out with amp & cable. He said "The difference is like a "walkman and a discman".

My quest for that perfect headphone has ended. I highly recommend this headphone. Right now I am in Audio Bliss.

Not bad, nor all that great [Posted on 2008-11-23]
Positive /// Let me start by saying you can't mess with the sound quality. Its the best by FAR. Sound quality across the frequency spectrum is top notch, and most of all the bass responce is the strongest i've ever experience in a set of cans. You can feel the lows in your neck, no joke!! The response from 5-20hz is rediculous...

Negative (1) /// I bought these cans for my ipod. They require wayyy more juice than ipod's put out. The volume level sucks!! They might be ideal for home theatre systems, but for ipods forget it. You cant have your cake and eat it too. Thats what i found here. Sound quality was the best but i couldn't turn the volume up where i wanted it ( i like it loud, like my sony mdr-v700dj's) - even full volume was wayy too low on these Denon's. I tried all sorts of things to push volume peak level higher, but to no avail.

Negative (2) /// The cloth coated wires are more troublesome than anything else. They are stiff and are all over the place. I like to walk around my place and listen to the ipod. Its near impossible to stuff these wires in a pocket to do so. They are STIFF AND NON FLEXABLE. If you are stationary on the couch then that'll work. Forget being mobile...

All and all, i love the cans but have to sell them. They're just not working for my applications...

If you are tired of Sony Studio Monitor headphones these are definiltely what you want. [Posted on 2008-12-07]
I've gone through 3 different Sony Studio Monitor headphones.
All i can say is, wow i think I'm converting to an audiophile.
Sony's always had pretty nice sound, but these knock it out of the ballpark.
First let me comment of the build quality. Extremely nice. The main bulk of the headphones are made of magnesium. Only thing plastic i see are the actual cups.
Sony's are almost always made of plastic. The actual supports for the cups always broke on me, hence me going through 3 pairs.
These are EXTREMELY comfortable. I've been listening to some of Bach, Radiohead, and some Bjork Vespertine. Just testing the range of sound on the Denon headphones.
On my Denon AVR-789 receiver and CD player,
i listended to a Jonas Starker recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's Six Suites for Solo Cello, and I was blown away.
Extremely head-filling sound. Clean,warm, punchy bass, mid's and high's.
I could finally hear all the subtle deep inhales of Jonas Starker as he's playing his cello. So killer!
Then i popped in a CD of Bjork Vespertine. I always felt album has some really nice production quality.
Wanted to test the bass response on a modern recording with bigger bass.
These Denon's didn't compromise. So much more recording details come out on these headphones. If anything i feel like modern recordings might add too much artificial processing to their recordings, because in these Denon's everything comes through. Almost too much detail. HAH!
3rd test listening i plugged the Denon headphones onto my iPhone and listened to some MP3's of Radiohead's In Rainbows songs.
Regardless of the fact that its MP3's and its playing off of some crappy Apple amplifier chip inside the iphone, the sound still sounded pretty damn amazing. MUCH better than any of my Sony's. I would say the bass wasn't as punchy and large as listening off of a proper receiver, and the some of the high's weren't as clean but this due to the fact that they are MP3's and its an iPhone. If i were to compare these to the Apple earbuds included with iphone's my old Sony Studio Monitor headphones, and my Bose Triports, on a scale between 1-10,with 10 being highest - it be as follow.

Apple earbuds - 3.0
Bose TriPort - 6.0
Sony MDR-V700DJ - 6.5
Denon AH-D2000 - 9.0

It's been 3 hours of straight listening so far, and these headphones are EXTREMELY comfortable. Hardly feel them on my head. They dont pinch like the Sony's ever did. I haven't had any of that listening fatigue like i had with the Sony's

Only complaint I have about these are that they don't fold up conveniently like the Sony DJ style headphones did, and for $200-$300 headphones, they didn't come with any kind of carry case or sack. The clothed cable are really thick, but if anything they protect them from getting kinked in any odd way.

If you are looking for uncompromising level of audio quality without having to break the $400-$$600 range for open Sennheiser Reference headphones.
I actually prefer closed style headphones for better privacy and shielding from ambient noise. Creates a more intimate listening space without using white noise like noise cancelation headphones.
I plan on getting a headphone amp from [...] for my ipod and converting all my CD's with a uncompressed codec for all my music now.

BOTTOM LINE: Killer killer headphones. HIGHLY recommended!

Expensive, somewhat cumbersome, but gound sound [Posted on 2008-12-29]
These are a good pair of headphones, arguably the best I've ever owned, but in hindsite, they probably weren't the best buy for me. All of my previous headphones or earbuds, came with cassette cd or mp3 players. I don't like or use earbuds, and the headphones wore out quickly, and had marginal sound. Usually the headphone either sucked entirely or the cord would get a short after a short while.
That was until I got some aiwa cross trainer HP-M034 headphones. They came with a cd player that sucked, but they fit and felt great, and more importantly the sound was awesome. I have used an abused these things for years now, and I have yet to find anything better. The cord is a tangled mess, but has never shorted out on me. I now use them for my cell phone and mp3 player.
Still I decided it was time to get a really good pair of headphones, and after some research got these Denons. They are comfy, with soft leather and look good. They are well built and sound great. I wanted a great headphone that could still be used with my mp3 players without an amp, and these Denon's seemed to fit the bill.
Unfortunately, they are somewhat expensive. They do not fold up or come with a case, and at this price they should. They will power your mp3 player and sound good without an amp, which alot of big headphones cannot do. However the volume will be a bit lower.
Since I usually use headphones to exercise these were not a good choice for me. The cord is about 10ft long, is thick and not detachable. The headphones will not stay on your head well if you are moving around much. These phones are for people that want to sit and plug them into your amp or receiver. Since I listen to most of my music on my Onkyo TV speakers, or my 4.1 Klipsch computer speakers, which sound great by the way, I've unfortunately found I have little use for these, despite the fact that they sound good and I like them. They are simply to big and loose and not loud enough to use with my mp3 players. Honestly I think my old Aiwas actually sound better then the Denon's when connected to my Mp3 player. But these Denon's do appear to be a good choice if you got the right equipment to hook them up too.
