Course Overview
This is the final course in a five part series that will provide programmers with the basic skills to build three-tier client/server solutions.

Learn To

Create an ActiveX document project and its objects by using Visual Basic 6.0.
Work with Active Server Pages (ASP) files, dynamic web pages, ASP objects and the IIS Application project.
Configure DCOM on a client computer and on a server computer.
Implement load balancing in a distributed application environment.
Create HTML help in a project by using HTML Help Workshop and package.
Deploy and manage scripts by using the Package and Deployment Wizard.

Audience
This course is designed for programmers using Visual Basic 6.0 and are currently building desktop applications and accessing corporate databases. Participants should have completed the first four courses in this series.

Objectives
Unit 1: ActiveX Document 1 - 2 hours

Identify the benefits of using ActiveX documents.
Create a new ActiveX document project.
Compile an ActiveX document.
Convert a specified form of a project into an ActiveX document to present information in a Web browser.
Match the events supported by the UserDocument object with the situations in which they occur.
Add a property to a UserDocument object.
Add an asynchronous read to an ActiveX document.
Match the methods of a Hyperlink object with their functions.

Unit 2: Active Server Pages (ASP) 1 - 2 hours

Create an ASP file by using Notepad.
Create a dynamic Web page by using Active Server Pages (ASP).
Create a dynamic Web page by using webclasses.
Write the code to execute an ActiveX Data Object (ADO) database.
Write the code to update information in a database.
Write the code to validate a user login against a database by using the Session object.
Generate a client-side script from a server by using the Response object.
Write the code to retrieve data by using the Request object.
Execute an IIS application by using the Project Explorer window.
Sequence the events in the WebClass Instancing process along with the steps that precede their firing.
Create an HTML template event by using the Designer window.
Connect the items in an HTML template WebItem to a Custom WebItem by using the Project Explorer window.

Unit 3: DCOM and Load Balancing 2 hours

Modify the machinewide settings for Distributed COM (DCOM) by using the Dcomcnfg.exe utility.
Change the settings for an ApplD by using the Dcomcnfg.exe utility.
Modify the identity of a server by using the Dcomcnfg.exe utility.
Sequence the steps to configure the client-side ApplD for a distributed application.
Redirect activation requests to the target computer running the distributed application by using the Dcomcnfg.exe utility.
Identify the features of static and dynamic load balancing.
Implement load balancing by using the Dcomcnfg.exe utility.

Unit 4: Packaging and Deploying 2 hours

Specify the name of the HTML Help file for an application by using the Project Properties dialog box.
Assign a contextual Help ID for a user interface element by using the Microsoft Visual Basic window.
Add the WhatThisHelp property to a form by using the Project Explorer window.
Create an HTML project help file by using the HTML Help Workshop window.
Create a table of contents for a project by using the HTML Help Workshop window.
Create an index in an HTML Help file by using the HTML Help Workshop window.
Install the Package and Deployment wizard as an add-in to the Visual Basic environment.
Package a Visual Basic 6.0 project into a standard setup package by using the Package and Deployment Wizard.
Package a Visual Basic 6.0 project into an Internet package by using the Package and Deployment Wizard.
Deploy a package on the network by using the Package and Deployment Wizard.
Deploy a package on the Web by using the Package and Deployment Wizard.
Manage scripts for a project by using the Package and Deployment.
