Comes Close but Veers off the Road [Posted on 2002-05-11] This popular title has a lot going for it - good graphics, excellent maneuvering and physics, and style to boot. However, the difficulty is much too high for even heardcore gamers. There seems to be something truly amiss with the makers of the game - despite the negative comments regarding gameplay, the game's sequel, Driver 2 (PSX) is actually harder than the original. In order to make the game playable, you either have to apply a patch released by Infrogrames or play in cheat mode. Then it will become only _barely_ playable. Unless you can find a cheap copy, avoid.
Just getting started! [Posted on 2002-06-19] I'm just getting started but I have to say this game is great! To start the storyline you have to pass an interview that is intense and challenging. I spent all day the first day training for it and the it took me three tries to pass it. It was completely cool! The slalom was the hardest most irritating part, but that only caused me to work harder for it. I can't slalom great but I'm much better. The first time I took a drive around town, I got completely frustrated; I couldn't control the car, navigate traffic, or make a turn to save my life. The cops were relentless and easily provoked. I could not control my speed so I always pissed them off. I fired up the game for the second time last night, the first thing I did was set the cops to easy. Man the control I had, I felt like I was in a movie. Weaving in & out of traffic like a pro, the cops are still tough but they are manageable, power sliding through the turns is absolutely necessary and some of the best fun I've had. If you want a challenging game that makes you feel like you are slamming the downtown streets of a high action cop show, then this is a game worth having. I'll have to update this review when I get a little further into the game.

driving lessons [Posted on 2003-05-24] Looking at some of the other reviews here that knock this game because of its difficulty makes me a bit mad. I found the game to be hard (the briefcase mission took me dozens of attempts) but this is what makes the game last - I still go back to it occasionally, looking for new ways to get the president home safe. Try getting to the gas station on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, or getting back to the hideout in China Town, playing "Survival" if you want impossible. By 2003 standards this is basic on graphics, all the roads are straight-line and the game fairly linear, but it still holds its own against its modern counterparts, and can be fun, and a challenge. Bouncing around those steep "Bullett" streets in San Franscico, or trying to get to the Hospital on a rainy LA night can still get the pulse racing and the palms sweaty!
A true classic! [Posted on 2006-07-21] This if my favorite installment in the Driver series. When i first put this game in the PSX and found out that the circle button was a special burnout button i was like "oh yea, this is the best game ever!". Yes the graphics are a little rough after playing Parallel Lines but it's still a true classic and always will be. One thing is for sure, and that is there will never bee a game with crazier cops. Try getting full felony, and getting good speed with cops a good ways behind you and slowdown really quick over the hump bridges in Miami. The cops just fly over you, its awesome. Great game. Still a favorite
