This program allows you to search for references via the web and library systems, create references and footnotes in any format for papers, and work fairly easily with Word. I find the organization possibilites of this program to be exceedingly helpful in my paper writing. I wish I had this software from the beginning of my graduate student career. I recommend it to everyone now!

I've been using EndNote for several years (Mac versions) and have kept up with new versions as they appeared. Generally, I find this version as useful as previous ones, as long as all the fancy stuff doesn't get in the way of usefulness. I've seen too many software upgrades trade functionality for bells-and-whistles, losing their intuitive interaction as they become more complex.

This version of EndNote is nearly at the tipping point of fancy vs functionality. It still does a good job of formatting citations, Cite-While-You-Write; and organizing reference, figures, and tables lists. One challenge was getting online citations to download directly to EndNote - it took three extra steps than it used to, and it takes more steps to find and set various parameters than previously.

One feature I especially like is that it is computer-based, not web-based. I don't have to maintain an internet connection to use the program and libraries of references I've created.

I suggest that if EndNote developers want to continue to add complexity, they should heed the design of tax-preparation software, such as TurboTax. I figure that if they can make tax-form preparation simple and straightforward, everything else should be a walk in the park!
