Good printer with some flaws that take some work [Posted on 2008-03-18] Epson R1900 Large Format Photo Printer
My previous printer was an HP that did not have the larger format and other capabilities of the R1900. In terms of print quality I did not see a major difference using the Epson supplied profiles for this printer with Epson paper. What showed up as bright on my monitor (it is calibrated) was less bright and less saturated in the prints. I then had to waste a great deal of paper and ink tweaking the settings to get closer to the screen image with a modified printer profile. To add to the issue when I contacted Epson support about the flat printing he directed me to their website for additional information and then noted that it had not been posted yet. There simply is not enough helpful information for the amateur from Epson yet, so if you are not thoroughly familiar with color management and color profiles you may be frustrated with the results. The shipped instructions are also not clear about using the roll feed attachments and the single sheet feed. This big printer takes up a lot of real estate and takes quite awhile to warm up, but once on it prints fairly fast. And once you have tweakd the printer profile for your tastes and the paper you are using it can produce very nice output. It just takes some work to get there.
WARNING when buying Epson products [Posted on 2008-04-18] PURCHASE YOUR EPSON PRODUCT THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED DEALER OR FROM EPSON DIRECTLY.
This is not a review of this product, but rather a word to the wise... Two and half months after my purchase of an Epson 10000XL scanner through Amazon, it stopped working. Through the followup and tech support process I learned that, because I purchased through Amazon, the manufacturer nor the seller would honor the 1 year warranty. Epson's position is that Amazon is not an authorized seller and that they merely act as broker for what can often be re-furbished or second hand merchandise.
So, should your purchase break or malfunction, as mine did, you are out of luck with regard to warranty.
This lesson cost me $2400.00
Not for designers on Mac [Posted on 2008-04-25] Be warned - the printer driver on this thing does not work with Adobe products on Mac. I spent a total of 3 hours on the phone with both Epson and Adobe trying to get it to print larger than letter size. When I went up to 11 X17, it just kept cutting the image in half. Epson was NO help at all. They knew nothing about Adobe products (Hellooo... Photoshop, Ilustrator, InDesign...) and basically said tough luck. If you're a designer, don't buy it!
Now it's going to cost me big bucks to send this turkey back.
DON'T BUY EPSON R1900 [Posted on 2008-05-03] I have had nothing but trouble with this printer. No help what so ever from Epson support.
Can't choose paper type for size or ICC profiles. After downloading newest driver can't choose paper type or turn off color management by printer.
Again, no help from Epson support.
When I had been able to print (I can't now with the new driver) the colors were not vivid - they were muddy and dull.
Don't waste your $500 like I did.
If I could give 0 stars I would
Great photos so far [Posted on 2008-05-11] Just received my Epson 1900 printer last week, but must say I am printing photos as good or even better than the prints I've had printed by the local camera shop. I have printed 12 x 12 pages with Adobe Photo Shop and Scrapbook Factory with no problems, just need to remember to set the page size for both the software and printer preferences. Overall I'm quite pleased with my purchase.
