Does the basics well (e.g. Powerpoint display) [Posted on 2007-09-01]
This unit works by using your laptop's 802.11 networking card to send the screen to the Plextor adapter box that is connected to the
projector's VGA cable. Supported resolution modes are 800x600 and 1024x768. The laptop must have the Presto! WMS software
installed (the thingie that sends your screen data over the network).

I tested it today using my desk monitor (taking the role of a projector) and my Dell Latitude D620 laptop and it seems to work OK,
for the most part. Software installation went fine, and when I ran the software it properly kicked the laptop into 1024x768 and
sent the image. The image quality was flawless. From the point of double-clicking to launch the send-program to first display is
about 20 seconds. Takes a similar time to disconnect and restore your regular laptop display settings (which it did without
problems) Those are the good points.

The negatives are:
0) I was unable to use the web browser while using the Send software. It is possible that the weak signal from our WLAN was being
hammered by the very-near-by Plextor box, but I think its equally likely that my laptop's wireless hardware didn't like being told
to talk to two different "networks" at the same time. Oh well, at least it didn't crasy either the Plextor software or the Browser software. the Browser just refused to connect. After exiting the Plextor, it recovered fine and browsing worked.
1) Update rate of the screen was a bit slow. I don't yet know if this is due to my laptop running 802.11b vs g...
2) Moving the mouse, I had a little difficulty when looking at the transmitted image. The cursor movement is a bit jerky. The laptop was fine, so if you look at the laptop while using it, it is not a problem.
3) Not too much success with movies yet. Windows movies were sent OK, but were slow frame rate (see comment about 802.11 mode
above). However, a Quicktime movie did not work at all. Not a terribly big surprise.
4) The software includes 3 "licenses". This makes absolutely no sense, given that one is buying hardware. However, the license
agreement seems to allow up to 3 concurrent users (which would probably be tricky anyway) - so maybe its OK. Gotta check with the
lawyers !

Not Impressed [Posted on 2007-12-01]
I tried this product earlier on in the year to work in a classroom environment with a Vista tablet pc.

The promised VISTA update took forever and was delayed from April to May to June to July..... till it finally came out in October 6 months late. Tech support were no help whatsoever and did not have a clue when it would come out.

I never got web access to work properly and the refresh rates for a tablet are totally unacceptable. The students were very distracted by the 2-3 second lag in the tablet to screen transfer. The software is also not unlimited and can only be installed on 3 computers. If you have visitors coming they will not be able to use the adapter unless they have paid for the software

I switched to the Infocus Liteshow 2 which is a far superior product and also cheaper.

Benefits over the Plextor include:

Rapid refresh times for use with a tablet
Unlimited software use for PC's allowing visitors to use it
Great and easy web access via wired or wireless connection to LAN
Capability to transfer audio in addition to video
Works well with video clips
Aux VGA input that can auto override the wireless connection
Very quick and easy straightforward connection

This Plextor Adapter is a very inferior product and is not worth the money they are asking for it.

a terrible product [Posted on 2007-12-12]
I have worked for months trying to configure this thing to work properly and finally have given up. Frequently the software cannot even find the adapter, and often when it does, the image will be poor and constantly re-tiling, making it useless. I'm not talking full-motion video: I mean even a static image. It does this frequently, notice, but not always. There's no apparent reason why it sometimes works but mostly doesn't. No, it is not my computer or wifi card, I've bought (and returned) two fancy new external wifi cards to rule that out. My tablet pc (motion m1400, 1 gig ram, 1.1 gig Pentium M) surpasses the plextor advertised requirements and has no problems connecting with other networks. It is not interference: the phenomena happens at home or work. I've spent hours playing with re-configuring it (via the ethernet port provided) with no success.

Support from Plextor was first unhelpful and then non-existent.

It is also expensive.

This is a second unit, the first of which I returned since the software couldn't connect with the adapter at all.

Not recommended!
