Excellent Space Sim [Posted on 2000-11-20] Even though FreeSpace 2 has been out for a while now, its predecessor should not be overlooked. The game has nothing to do with Descent, other than the fact that the same team is behind it. This is a full-fledged space combat simulation. The Terrans and the Vasudans have been embroiled in a lengthy conflict, stemming from a "misunderstanding" during the first formal meeting of the two species. During this war, a mysterious third alien species enters the scene and begins wrecking havoc upon the Terrans and the Vasudans. Hence, the long time foes turn into allies in order to defend their homeworlds from an even more significant threat: the Shivans. The graphics in this game are outstanding. Flying alongside a two kilometer-long enemy capital ship is not uncommon here. The mission design is very good and the story will keep you interested. Although the list of controls may seem daunting, you only need to know a few of them to effectively play the game. The music is appropriately epic throughout and the sound effects are great with a set of headphones. The sound of Shivan fighters streaming by your craft is unforgettable. Even cooler is that the designers included FRED, the FReespace EDitor. This easy-to-use program lets you do virtually everything the designers themselves did. There are also many awesome user-made missions out there for after you beat the main campaign. I'd say that the only real flaw to this game is the multiplayer. Although they fixed the code in FreeSpace 2, the original still lags quite a bit. But, the single-player game is worth the price of admission alone! For the current price of this game, it's a steal! Don't miss your chance to check out this superb game.
Old but Interesting [Posted on 2000-12-24] I played the game at a friends house on his computer. It is a standered machine, noting fancy. Annyway the game ran like a dream! The graphics are increadably good, especally considering the games age. I like most of the ships and almost all of the weapons. The plot is very good too. Overall I can not wiat until my copy of the new game "FreeSpace 2" comes. Yes the game was that good.
Best Simulation Game Ever! [Posted on 2001-02-28] This game is the best simulation Interplay has created. You can control wingmen and order them around. If you use cheats, it won't let you pass the level, therefore pushing you to the limit. You can earn ranks and medals (I am a 1st Lt. Ace). The game is very hard to manuvere if you don't have a joystick. The game is awesome and is a must buy for any pilot!
still one of the best space flight/combat sims [Posted on 2002-03-08] I was used to games like X-Wing but wanted a new one. Picked up Descent Freespace and was most impressed. The graphics are awesome as is the gameplay. Suffice it to say I never played X-Wing again. ;) Freespace is a tad bit old (1998) but still great! If you want an inexpensive game that is fun to play with tonnes of action and space dog fighting, get this one!
Unreal! [Posted on 2006-04-05] Back in 1999 I never saw graphics like this before! This was one of the most mezmerizing gaming experiences I've ever had! The people who made the soundtrack for this game must really like Depeche Mode!
