dollar for dollar it can't be beat [Posted on 2008-09-20] After extended research the Fujifilm Finepix S1000fd seemed to be a great camera....and it definitely is. The variety of functions make it a fine, versatile camera. I took it on vacation shortly after receipt and I found it every bit as good as cameras costing much more. I made a presentation from the photos taken on vacation and the viewers were amazed at the quality. Dollar for dollar I would recommend this camera to anyone as an easy-to-use camera that is as versatile as any I have owned.
Disappointed [Posted on 2008-09-25] I had an earlier Finepix S-5000 (3Mpx) and took some of my most satisfying photos with that camera. When the sensor died, I looked for a replacement and settled on the S1000fd based on reviews and features for the value. So much for value. My biggest disappointment has been pure and simple image quality. It looks good on the camera, but when processed in Photoshop for effects or enlargements, the pixel quality is the worse I've seen. Maybe I just got a bad one, but I'm to the point of looking into returning it if at all possible.
Great digital camera [Posted on 2008-09-29] I've had my Fujifilm Finepix S1000fd for about three weeks now. Being new to the digital camera, the helpful basic manual C/D and the booklet, make learning how to operate this camera a breeze. So far, it has done everything I've asked of it. My friends and relatives are amazed at how clear the photographs are. Thanks Fuji and thanks Amazon.com for selling it to me at such a competitive price. They had everyone beat by the price and with free shipping what else could you ask for?
Good camera, certainly with flaws [Posted on 2008-10-01] The Fujifilm s1000fd is a good camera. I need to get that established. The photo quality is excellent for the most part, and it has quite a deal more versatility than a standard Point and Shoot camera. That said, it has many flaws. It falls down to a choice--it's a darn cheap camera, so if you're willing to compromise for some things, you'll end up on well.
Pros: The photo quality is pretty darn good. 10 megapixels. The control interface, though a bit clunky, is efficient and works pretty well. The lens is very powerful--12x is a long distance, and a similar lens on a dSLR would cost a lot more than the entire camera does here. SD/SDHC compatibility is nice. The camera has full manual controls for budding photographers. Startup time is fast. The AA battery use is nice for people like me who go backpacking for three weeks and don't have the ability to recharge a Lithium battery pack.
Cons: The shutter response time is pathetically slow. My dad's Canon ultra-compact SD660 is faster to respond than the Fuji, despite the fact that the Fujfilm is newer and better. The focusing speed is really slow too. No Image Stabilization--which is a must with a 12x lens! The Automatic mode bumps the ISO too high, which results in too much noise. The camera doesn't work too well indoors, either, as the white balance is totally messed up with artificial lighting, despite the use of indoor-lighting specific White Balance settings.
Basically, if you're looking for photographic quality without regards to response time and the like, it's a great camera. And it's really, really cheap compared to the other cameras in it's class. For the value, it's great. If you're picky about cameras (like I'm starting to be), the camera is a bit of a annoyance. But it's a good choice for those not willing to spend $400+ on an entry-level SLR.
Spotty picture quality [Posted on 2008-10-01] I would not buy again
sometimes you get great pictures and the other times you can delete them when you look at the quality
The lighting is hard even in the manual mode
the Auto mode is only good for indoor settings
do not buy this camera find another that can be one you can rely on for good photos
