I love my Etrex Venture HC [Posted on 2008-08-08] My son-in-law introduced me to Geocaching and loaned me his older model Garmin Legend. I struggled looking for caches when around trees, metal structures and power lines they all seemed to effect the satellite signals. When I received my Garmin eTrex Venture HC, my wife and I went out to search for some caches. She used the old model while I tried to familiarize myself with the newer one. The Venture HC out performed the older Legend by far. The newer Garmin responds to satellite signals and my movements much quicker. Trees, metal structures and powerlines have little effect on the Venture. Now my wife wants one of her own and I don't blame her.
Fun! [Posted on 2008-08-11] We took this on our first geocaching trip to Maine. Worked great. Had a great time!
Nice unit with a color screen for under $120 [Posted on 2008-08-15] Picked this up because we were interested in geocaching. The geocaching mode makes it easy to go from one find to another, and Garmin's website makes it a snap to load new caches to your unit. The color screen looks great and it appears to be very accurate since we've been able to locate most of the caches we've searched for. This unit does not do turn by turn road directions and doesn't have removable memory so if those are features you want, choose another unit. The internal memory lets you load a fair amount of map data although I have been able to fill it up. The base map that comes loaded in the unit is just that...basic. If you want streets other than major higways, topographical or waterway maps you'll have to buy those separate. For the cost of the additional maps they should give the units away...lol. Battery life is decent, maybe 12-14 hours on a pair of AA's and thats with using the backlight at 100% most of the time.
Happy with purchase [Posted on 2008-08-16] This is my first GPS. I use it for Geocaching. I found this model to be easy to learn to use. I do use third party software on my computer to download waypoints onto my GPS unit. I have found the batteries last longer than I espected, but I would have preferred a battery that I could recharge with out taking them out of the GPS. Yes I did purchase rechargeable batteries for the GPS, but you have to remove them for charging. I am happy with my eTrex Venture HC GPS unit.
Great Geocaching GPS [Posted on 2008-08-17] I use the Venture HC only for geocaching and did not purchase the detailed maps for street navigation or hiking. Buttons are not intuitive as they are unmarked. Their functions need to be learned then remembered. It works great, accurate to 9 feet in many places, and is steady where others have complained of reduced signal strength. Downloading waypoints from my PC is seamless.
